Yep, that is right, 0. In fact, they won 0 last year, too. Furthermore, when I stop and think about the achievements of Brown athletics this year, I can only think of a precious few, beating Princeton in BB, wrestling beating P, Pr,+ C to finish 2nd, the women's golfers finishing 3rd and the men's indoor track finishing 3rd. In short, it was one sorry year. How much longer is this going to go on? I have to admire Princeton for putting so much effort and money in to winning 11 championships. They spare no amount of time or money recruiting the top athletes in each of their sports. They give these kids a chance to experience winning and championships. Then when these kids graduate, they not only are champions, they approach life like the winners. Nice way to feel. Nice Idea. I wish it were more contagious.

Still recovering from Ruth Simmons’s treacherous effort to turn Brown into
An impotent imitation of University of Chicago when it decried Athletics.
It is, however, at a point now where it’s current excellent President must deploy an inclusive plan to coordinate Admissions with Athletics eliminating
Decision delay, excessive overeading of credentials, additional athletic admission numbers for expansion of team ranks, more purposeful team liaisons, and recognition of Coaches direction of what each sport needs.
Brown can make its move if it does so now. Perhaps removing its mediocre
Softball Coach is a sign AD Hayes is going to aggressively let it be known results will accompany expansion of needed support. Some of its sports are showing defined promise now: Womens Lax, Soccer, Wrestling but the demand is not just bringing more up but to further advance the better ones.
The Rowing decline has a reason and it sure as hell is not Coaching.
Grin keep the foot on the pedal. Silence is the creation of obscurity.

The announcement a few years ago that Brown was raising its AI?

Why are we surprised at this result? Dartmouth's athletic program went into a nosedive when we did the same thing in the late 1990s.

She must create a caveat for Wrestling because Cornell is consistently highest level with no problem admitting reloads.
The rest is up and down.

To Brown's significant credit, whatever else they may have done, they are not taking their cues from the factory schools and engaging in a race to the bottom. I'm for a responsible "balance" (whatever that means subjectively) between academics and athletics. I was formerly in the administration at Brown and have a feel for the place. Based on that, I expect that when B moves to reinforce its athletic programs, it will do so in a sensible way.

Some Ivy presidents like Martha Pollack at Cornell believe if a school is really bad at sports then that will some how raise our academic ranking???? Meanwhile schools like Yale have recently won NCAA titles in both hockey and lacrosse, along with last fall's Ivy League title in football. Harvard has dominated Ivy League football over the past twenty years. At least at Cornell it's really too bad we lost President Elizabeth Garrett to cancer as she really wanted to improve athletics and student life at Cornell, where Martha Pollack thinks our students should be buried in their lap tops or debating her ultra liberal politics.

I think that Cornell's a preeminent school that has high quality and huge range, but you're in Ithaca . . . like Madison . . . like Bezerkeley . . . et al. Uber-liberal zip code . . . uber-liberal prez, no?

Bill Bradley (no, not a Brown guy) once wrote: "you can't buy heart." I think he was correct in making that statement, and he may have chosen to expanded on this notion to say, you can't measure everything in terms of sporting championships or GPAs... Kids with Brown degrees are not readers of this forum, but will continue to do just fine and contribute mightily to our social well being.

And having Jim Garrett call you a loser is about as ringing an endorsement as being disinvited from a White House gathering by a rather nefarious Penn grad! By the way, no lifetime losers, to my knowledge, emerged from Columbia's football program in the 1980s- regardless of what the scoreboard told us back then.

Jake's a happy man, prepare to take as much credit for CU's football renaissance as the coaches- which is to say a whole heck of a lot!

Garrett said his team "were like", not that they were drug addicted losers. Perhaps a fine distinction lost in the mists of time. Garrett probably wouldn't have worked out, given the state of the the CU admin at the time, and his personality, but it would have been interesting to see how well he would have recruited, and if his sons could've played, but they wound up at Princeton the next season.

But here's the NYT's story:

Garrett maintains that he was misquoted by The New York Times (fake news!). In the very nice tribute which Jake Novak posted on February 12 upon Garrett's passing, Jake says that the actual statement was "they played like drug-addicted losers."

http://culions.blogspot.com/search?updated-max=2018-03-09T07:03:00-08:00&max-results=5&start=5&by-date=false

I have read elsewhere that Garrett's actual quote was even more benign, that he said his players were "addicted to losing." To me, that is a harsh but accurate way of describing a program which has lost for so long that it has no sense of how to close out a victory, even when leading 17-0 at halftime, as Columbia was against Harvard.

I'm inclined to given Garrett the benefit of the doubt for the simple reason that it makes sense for a frustrated coach to say that his players are addicted to losing more so than they played like drug-addicted losers.

I believe that the "addicted to losing" quote is from people attempting to explain what Garrett meant, rather than what he actually said.

If Garrett claims he actually said that the team was "like drug-addicted losers," and that the "like" part was dropped in translation by the Times (and others), I am willing to believe him.

Pretty much everyone--if not indeed everyone--reported the quote without the word "like." So as was the case with Bill Cosby, it's Garrett's word against dozens.

What I think happened is that Garrett was so angry and worked up when talking with the press after the game that he either meant/tried to say the word "like," but it did not come out audibly for the press to pick up. Hence, it was not reported...

How many reporters do you think were there to cover the 1985 season-opening game between Columbia and Harvard? Let's put it this way. They probably had left over sandwiches after the game.

I'll bet that when you read "pretty much everyone" reporting what Garrett said, it's other people reporting what the New York Times printed he said.

I am probably over reacting on President Martha Pollack but I and many alumni are "PISSED" because she keeps kicking our fraternities off campus. Many of our athletes were members of those fraternities that brought some life to the campus. One of the entire reasons many alumni go back to campus is to visit their fraternity or sorority

Drawing on the Simmons cabal you may even see Wrestling marginalized if this is a defined pattern.
