This article is a fitting tribute to the significant accomplishments of Yale AD Tom Beckett. It’s easy to forget the poor shape Yale athletics was in when he took over in 1994.

His idea of a bowl game for the Ivy champ is probably retiring with him. Too bad.

After watching Yale win National Championships in both Hockey and Lacrosse in a span of 5 years I much prefer FCS playoff participation than a meaningless Bowl game.

Was that Hockey title at the HCS or HBS level?

Whatever the intended snark, both the D1-FBS and the D1-FCS subdivisions have more participating schools than all of D1 Ice Hockey.

Exactly, which is why the Capital One Cup awards 60 points to a FCS National Champion and only 25 points to the Division I Hockey National Champion.

Great article about Beckett. One thing about his tenure which the piece mentions: His highest profile achievements -- more accurately, Yale's highest profile achievements under his leadership -- have occurred at the end of his tenure. I am pleased that he had the opportunity to experience going out on top. He had to put in almost two decades of preparatory work before the results became most apparent.

As discussed into another thread, I am curious what, if any, other factors allowed the preparatory work to finally bear obvious fruit. Two decades of groundwork is a lot.

Whatever the answer, it's rare for anybody in any field to retire on top. Tom Beckett has the happy opportunity to do so.

"Far better" than two NCAA National Championships in major sports? I hope that you're right! She has big shoes to fill.

The missing ingredient to Beckett's success was found when Salovey became President of Yale five years ago. Salovey's predecessors were at best indifferent to athletics, or worse hostile to them. Once Beckett had an administration that fully supported his efforts the great successes that we Yale fans have enjoyed these last five years became possible.

The past one who will not be named, Was so smart he lost his common sense. He Was not able to comprehend the magnitude, in which sports plays with in the University,, Alumni, Community, ,City, suburbs .
In all intents and purpose the man was a buffoon . May we never speak of him again.

I thought Levin was a little too close to William Bowen who influenced Ivy athletic policy with his negative views on the place of athletics. Levin's daughter Sarah was listed as co-author of "Rclaimin the Game".

Levin's baleful influence on Yale's athletics program was exercised via his alliance with Bowen, who by Levin's tenure was at the Carnegie Foundation. Levin also had anti athletics acolytes spotted in high administrative and governance positions at the University, such as Univ Secty Linda Lorimer, and her husband, Trustee Chas. Ellis.

Good riddance to all of them, Beckett must have had the patience of Job to wait out these naysayers!!!

gentlemen; mr levin was an egg head at best who was not a pal to our blue squad.outside the sports arena he did grade much better.i for one was glad to see him retire just wish it was ten years earlier.in a bit of a dichotomy mr levin would venture onto to the field after the cantab clash to greet our blue players mostly after loss due to his view of the world toward football.
