If you want even more sporting excitement, fly out to Las Vegas and play in the World Series of Poker, which is about to kick off at the Rio Casino.
Ten years ago, a friend of mine Steve was laid off from his Wall Street job and, to give himself a break, he flew out and signed up to play in the $10,000 No-Limit Hold 'Em Main Event. He had literally never played in a poker tournament in his life.
After the first day, another friend updated me: "Hey, I think Steve is doing pretty well out in Vegas." With over 8,000 entrants, I was dismissive of what my second friend was saying: "Sure, sure, good for Steve."
The next day, my second friend says, "Hey, Steve is still alive in the tournament. I think he's actually one of the leaders."
Anyway, to accelerate to the end of the story, Steve made it to "The Final Table" of nine finalists, eventually finishing sixth and pocketing over $1 million in prize money. That's an excellent way to beat the summer sports doldrums.
As Teddy Roosevelt said, "The credit goes not to the critic, but the man in the arena."
