Columbia's National Championship Lightweight Crew won its race at the Henley Royal Regatta on day 1 by beating the University of Edinburgh in clear water by 2.5 lengths. Well done, Lion Rowers!

There are a pile of Ivy crews at Henley this year, and the various categories are so confusing it gets hopeless trying to keep it all straight. One of Colubia’s Fours remains, one is gone, crews from Brown, Yale (men and women) and Princeton are still around, Cornell lost to ‘Cuse.

Tomorrow is the quarterfinals in each of the many divisions. One interesting matchup tomorrow is Yale’s IRA champ heavies (although not the full first boat) against Princeton’s IRA #2 lightweights.

Cole Tilden is the only 1V in Yale's Henley boat.

Yale heavies take Princeton Lights by a seat in a great race. Columbia four wins to go to the semis, as do the Yale women. Brown heavies later. I think that’s all the remaining Ivies....

Columbia's four overtook the National University of Ireland in a come-from-behind win in clear water. Nicely done. On to the semis.

I think this is the farthest Columbia has advanced since they were the first non-English crew to be victors at Henley, winning the Visitors Cup in 1878.

The correct answer is "none of the above." There was no cox.

The one standing on the left was the designated "spare" who did not get to compete.

Columbia and Yale women lose. Yale heavies vs. Washington later, last Ivy standing.

Ha! Washington tromps Yale because almost no one in the boat was from the 1V! (perhaps no one) Yale first boat tromped Washington for the National Championship

Thanks for that news. I was wondering if they caught a crab or had a steering problem on that narrow course. Sounds like they brought the JV or the 3rd varsity.
