Perhaps it’s best to step back and look at Princeton over the last 30 years. In Admissions, that spans the legendary Fred Hargadon — they named a new dorm after him — and Rapelye, who as his successor was understandably viewed with concern (came from a small women’s school, etc etc). In Athletics, for the board folks, it spans the entirety of ADs Walters and Marcoux. In that time, both Princeton’s undergrad academic rating and Athletic achievements have become and remained prodigious.

Aside from the boy/girl thing, it’s intriguing to see the differences in the two spots. Principally, neither of the Admissions folks had a degree from or had ever worked at Princeton. The ADs were both storied athletic alumni (indeed, Princeton has never had a non-alum AD).

Why has this worked over this extended period of time, given the inherent friction between the two offices? Principally, because the overall coordination of both with trustees and the administration has been better than strong, thanks to goodwill on all sides and a high degree of skill on behalf of the coaches requesting slots, and admissions supporting them whenever feasible. They truly (and the trustees would stomp on them if they didn’t) behave like they’re on the same team. As we’ve seen time and again on this board, that’s much harder than it looks.

This structural support would lead to optimism regarding Rapelye’s successor, although it is a dreadful job given the 20,000+ kids who are fully qualified every year and the ability to say yes to only about 1900.
