Subject: Maine at Yale

Maine could well be the toughest opponent on Yale's schedule. Ranked #16 in the FCS they have already beaten one FBS team Western Kentucky and played Central Michigan close. With big athletic linebackers they likely have the best defense our runners will face this season. A win over Maine would mean a lot in measuring the strength of the Yale team vs the rest of the league.

The players who were freshman when Yale won in Orono are now seniors.

It's hard to predict how Yale will play not knowing the injury situation

So you're setting this up as a great triumph for Eli over long odds?

Don't you think of yourself as a jerk for obsessively excusing every failure to win by 4 touchdowns because: 1. "we're a young team", or 2. "the refs discriminated against us", or 3. "ooooh, we had all these injuries". I take it you don't think of yourself as a jerk, but just an excuse-monger. That's O.K. Its fun to watch, if always predictable!

He argued that Yale lost to Dartmouth last season because of a blown call.

Several other Yale posters asserted--accurately--that the referee should have called Graham's catch a touchdown last season against Dartmouth.

That may be true, but I always said that the play that cost Yale the game was a roughing the passer call on 4th down on Dartmouth's winning drive.

In other words, self-inflicted.

Yes, O hides in Mommy's basement apartment with his banners and his Star Wars toys when Harvard's sucking wind. And yes he reappears like the red tide when he hopes H's tide has turned. That said, this entertaining site would not be the same without this sad embarrassment to the university he implies he attended.

Since when are the normal fan sentiments over the chances of winning the next game or strong views concerning a ref call that may have deprived a team of an undefeated season become anything but normal fan sentiments.

There used to be a time when much of the differing opinions between alums from the different Ivys regarding last Saturday's game were argued around the water cooler, at the club or bar car, and expressions were more often jocular rather than unpleasant. Even by the guys who once wore a big H sweater.
By the way, I don't remember any complaints in those days about the bathrooms at the Bowl. Guess those Mad Men era types were just better trained in more ways than one

Maine might have beaten Central Michigan if they didn't lose their starting qb in the first quarter. Their defense is led by linebackers who are fast, weigh about 240 lbs and held CM to less than 100 yds rushing and less than 100 yds passing. Maine held their other FBS opponent Western Kentucky to 42 yds rushing and 347 yds passing.

Below is an article from today's YDN. Wondering if it's Reno's way of telling us to expect more starters will remain out because of injuries which means continued reliance on a"young team" again.

Yale has played Maine nine times and never lost to them, out-scoring the "Black Bears" 192-17 in those games, most recently in 2015.

And if those teams were playing, those prior results might actually mean something, although I imagine most of the players are a little out of shape by now.

In the current world, Sagarin shows Maine at 131 and Yale at 171 (Harvard at 170). Not that Sagarin is the be-all, but when read in conjunction with the actual game results, a relevant factor.

gentlemen; in my minds eye the bears would be lucky to finish fourth in the ancient eight. the bears beat the wildcats who have not won a game and lost to the red raiders and beat the hilltoppers who have only won one game. throw in the recent loss to the chippewas whose only win is against the bears. our blue squad despite the recent untimely injuries still have playmakers who will make this game a literal dogfight.

Observer is being sardonic as he knows well, I believe, while emphasizing "recorded history,"that Yale is the underdog in this clash because of Maine's current strength, which is greater than it has been. He is, if the past is record, setting this up to provide testimony, should Yale lose, by suggesting that Yale should win when it may - but may not. This is not a friendly observation. There are always good possibilities for winning and one must believe. That's why they play the game. Yale beat Army. No one thought it could. But the odds here are in Maine's favor as the odds makers attest.

Agree with your views O15. However I believe the odds of Yale getting a win will be substantially diminished if Dudek is not playing or not playing at 100%. Yale beat Army primarily on the legs of Tyler Varga. Yale without Dudek in any game is the same as Yale when Varga was injured.

I hope Dudek is healthy, but if an extra week is needed to make sure he is, he should sit out.

It looks like Maine is tough against the run, but not as strong against the pass.

Maybe a big day from Rawlings and the receivers is what's needed to win this week.

I liked Varga but my fav over the last 10-15 yrs is Brown's Nick Hartigan although Nick Schwieger was pretty darn good as well

Sagarin's "Recent" ratings (weighs recent performance more heavily, which is important since our teams have barely started playing compared to the rest of Div 1) has the following predictions for this week:

Princeton by 7.53 over Columbia
Harvard by 6.01 over URI
Brown by 6.00 over G-town
Dartmouth by 4.22 over Penn
Maine by 4.20 over Yale
Sacred Heart by 8.32 over Cornell
