The refrain that older Elis probably remember helps explain why the Dartmouth game used to draw crowds to the Bowl that would only be exceeded by the games against Princeton and
Harvard: " the coaches want most to beat Dartmouth, the players want to beat Princeton, and the alumni want most to beat Harvard."
The festive atmosphere began early on Dartmouth game day, starting with the traditional Bladderball game on the Old Campus. When played under a sunny sky with early fall colors on the trees this scrum with an outsized ball captured the imagery of what could best be described as uniquely Ivy and only something that Yale could come up with.
Perhaps the essence of the high spirited competition between the residential colleges was how it entertained the spectators which included students, family members, friends, and weekend dates of the Yale men. It helped to set in motion the mood and energies for those who would head later to the Bowl for the game against the Big Green which in those days had another nickname that has now become politically incorrect.
The anticipation of a "classic showdown" beteen rival coaches Oliver and Blackman; Cozza and Blackman would sometimes generate enough excitement for the young Elis to hold an impromptu pep rally. Recall the days of pep rallys anyone?
This year's game will be on a Friday night with national tv coverage. Gone are the days of Bladderball on Dartmouth weekend, pep rallys and big turnouts at the Bowl; but for sure we are anticipating again another "classic showdown."
