I don't see why this merits a story.

There are probably 12 columbia players all working very similar jobs, as well as working out once or twice a day. I even know of one for sure at JP morgan. What is apparently a notable exception to the rule at a big 10 school is run of the mill at an ivy.

Well aren't you wonderful! This is a the kind of elitism that makes the real world hate the Ivy League. Instead of saluting this kid, you say "big deal, we have 12 of him".

I applaud this young man for being a student-athlete and participating in the summer internship at JP Morgan, despite pressure from his coaches to stay on campus to work-out. Indiana actually has one of the best undergraduate business programs in the country and this young man maintains a 3.79 average in finance. I am sure he would do just fine at Wharton or any of the Ivies.

I am hearing more and more Ivy League coaches requiring or encouraging their players to remain on campus during the summer to work out. I would like to see all NCAA schools have a moratorium on summer practices so these kids can get a summer job and prepare for life after college. There's no reason why college football players can't have a summer job and workout at their local high school during the evening. Especially in the Ivy League where the season doesn't even start this year until September 20th. It may be an internship on Wall Street, in a hospital, working on a farm, or even flipping burgers. The point is a summer job is very important for all college students, athletes included.

That is probably a very good idea, but no doubt very hard to enforce such a moratorium. It would provide a better transition into the real world.

Plenty of good internships around Princeton for the players to get during the summer. The workouts are scheduled so that the players can have these internships and still get ready for the upcoming season. You can't push yourself as hard by yourself as you can with 30 of your teammates during the summer. I guess its a question of how bad you want to win.

You not only may not push yourself as hard, but if your QB, RB and receivers are in town over the summer, they can affirmatively work on timing and getting familiar with each other. Obviously, it isn't the same thing when you are in shorts and doing it "informally" (at least, officially), but still has some use. This is just a part of the long-term growth in specialization and year-round commitment expected of players.
