A major concern coming out of the loss in Hanover last week was whether the defense could return to form and which offense would show up in a huge rivalry game with a share of the title at stake.
It is a tribute to the coaching and character of this team that Princeton brought its A-game on both sides of the ball (kicking game was another matter …).
The defense was playing again without two All-Ivy caliber players (Stallworth and Ndukwe) but Tyler, Johnson, Wright, Beard, Jester, Stagg, Ruttlen, Forbes, etc. played lights out from the first snap. Yale has a potent offense and Grooms had been playing really well. But the Tiger defense had the upper hand throughout and shut the Elis down, particularly in the second half.
That was not a surprise to me because I was at the Harvard game and witnessed the intensity and depth of the Princeton defense.
The offense however had sputtered in its two biggest games against H and D. Yesterday, despite the loss of Collin Eaddy, the OL gave Smith time, he was extremely patient and accurate and he also picked up a lot of yardage on the ground. The play-calling also seemed more creative and aggressive and the Tiger WRs all made huge plays catching, running and blocking downfield.
Kudos and thanks to Coach Surace and especially the senior class for putting last week in the rear view mirror and turning in an outstanding effort against Yale. This team is 26-3 over the past three seasons, one more to go!
