Subject: Lincoln Riley to USC!

Before the administration at Texas and Oklahoma jumped at the chance to join the SEC, they would have been well advised to ask Lincoln Riley and Tom Herman/Steve Sarkisian/whoever the hell is coaching Texas next week, "Do you really want to compete in the hornet's nest that is the SEC?"

Riley in particular had it sweet in the Big XII, by far the easiest path to the CFP. Just beat TCU and Iowa State and you're almost there. I'm sure the morning he read in the Houston Chronicle that UT and OU were joining the SEC, he thought, "Gotta call my agent." Why would he want to make his life 10x more difficult for 1/10 the upside?

So good luck to Texas and Oklahoma getting run over by Nick Saban and Kirby Smart without Lincoln Riley or whoever will be coaching Texas next season. Enjoy your $ millions while in the middle of the SEC pack. As I said at the time, I'm not even sure Texas will make more money after netting out the lost revenue from the Longhorn Network. They just like kicking the Other Eight of the Big XII. That's the sport in which UT excels.

Karma can be a bitch.

It's been about seven hours since the news broke about Lincoln Riley leaving Oklahoma for USC. In that time, Sooner quarterback Spencer Rattler has announced that he is entering the transfer portal. Five Oklahoma recruits have announced that they have decommitted, including a five-star quarterback who plays for Los Alamitos in Los Angeles. Hmmmm. . . . I wonder where he'll end up?

I wonder if the powers that be at Oklahoma think maybe the SEC isn't quite the cure-all that they thought. And that's the thing. What in Norman, Oklahoma needed curing? Absolutely nothing. They had it all. A terribly weak conference which just barely qualified, by virtue of history and nominal Power Five status, as a pathway to the CFP. The Sooners have their ticket halfway punched every season on Labor Day.

I know that four-star recruits are rare. What in God's name is a five-star recruit? A guy who has already played in the NFL a little but is coming back to college to earn a degree via the Covid exemption?

I wasn't in the room. But if Texas told Oklahoma "we're going to the SEC. We'd prefer you come. But if you don't, then we're sure that Oklahoma State would take your seat on the plane."

If that was the case, then Oklahoma's tagging along makes pretty good sense.

The razor rules again.

Yup, I think your scenario is probably exactly how it went down. And to be fair to the geniuses in Norman, their recruiting pipeline does benefit from being in the same conference as Texas. All those speedsters from Dallas and Houston wanna make sure that mamma can see her boy play when he comes to town for road games.

But I do hope that somebody at Oklahoma first asked Texas, "Uh, are you guys sure that competing in the SEC is such a great idea?"

The cash distributions to all SEC Members for broadcast, sponsorships, and merchandise makes it worthwhile.

Ask Vanderbilt.
Despite getting smashed every weekend in football, the $payout and high level participation in other sports (basketball, baseball, softball, soccer etc) support the budgets of all other sports.

IG, you are almost always a voice of reason on this board.

But football in Norman and Austin isn't *JUST* about money, as important as $ always is.

Unlike Vanderbilt, Texas and Oklahoma need to win like they need oxygen. It's part of their self-worth.

Ask Charlie Strong and Tom Herman, plus any other coaches I've forgotten who've passed through Austin recently. It's hard to keep up with the revolving door at the Darrell K Royal Memorial Stadium.

Riley or no Riley, Rattler was headed for the Portal the moment he lost his starting position to a freshman who performed quite well.

You are correct, sir.

Still, gotta love the timing.

For a weekend in which my team did not play, this has been a great weekend for college football. Who saw the end of the North Carolina-NC State or Oklahoma-OK State dramas? This is why we love this game. And to wake up to the USC news this morning? Cherry on the sundae, baby. Thank you, L. Riley.

"I know that four-star recruits are rare. What in God's name is a five-star recruit? A guy who has already played in the NFL a little but is coming back to college to earn a degree via the Covid exemption?"

Roughly speaking, it works like this:

Five-star: Top 30 nationally
Four star: Top 250-300
Three-star: Top 750-800
Two-star: Any ranking below 800

Oklahoma AD Joe Castiglione has issued a statement, the nuggets of which include his observation that there is "no reason to believe" USC communicated with Lincoln Riley "in season."

Given that Oklahoma's regular season did not end until about 10:30 PM local time on Saturday night and Riley tendered his resignation on Sunday, that would suggest USC led their outreach to Riley with an offer and he accepted it almost immediately. I mean, there's barely enough time for Riley's agent to say, "Let me see if there is other interest out there."

Riley was eager to get out of Norman. Monday morning, a private jet provided by USC did just that.

Last August I mentioned that Oklahoma has a fairly easy path to the Final Four . Texas and Oaklhmona's departure to the SEC doesn't make sense. In most years one can pencil in Oklahoma as Big 12 champion \ Final Four contender. When the Sooners join the SEC I see them as the next Auburn \ LSU. They will be good for 8-10 regular season wins per year and once every 4 years they will have a stellar year and reach the Final Four.
Texas will suffer when they move to SEC. If they have a difficult time with Oklahoma just add Auburn, Alabama, Georgia, LSU, Florida and Kentucky. The realistic goal for the Longhorns will be 7-5 and a appearance in the Wal-Mart Bowl.
Both teams are fully funded and they benefit from their blue blood status. The last 12 years Texas has benefited from their iconic brand because their reputation is above their actual performance.

This has to be a money move for both institutions. Which reminds me of a Irish folk tale: If you capture a leprechaun he will grant you a wish. If you're wish involves greed the Leprechaun is still obligated to granting the request. However, it ends in disaster. Texas and Oklahoma may soon experience that.

Bob Stoops has returned to the Sooners to Coach their Bowl game. Wisconsin's Berry Alvarez has done that a couple times . It has to be special for the program when a living legend coach returns for a game.

Last summer I mentioned the Big-12 will be considerably weaker without Oklahoma. If the Big 12 can keep their "power 5 " status this can open it up for the remaining schools. A team can schedule a brutal OCC games and if they win two of them they are Final Four contenders . If they go 0-3 in OCC they can win the Big-12 at 9-4 and end up in the Fiesta Bowl - which is a great consultation prize. Ironically
The AAC and C-USA has suffered the most from Texas and Oklahoma departure to the SEC.

With so many teams jumping around between conferences in so many sports (who would have guessed that John’s Hopkins would eventually join the Big Ten(?) … in Lacrosse?), I can no longer say who belongs where and in what sports. I will admit that even prior to this period of unraveling my interests in college athletics were very parochial. But, the influence of $ has only lessened my interest in sports beyond the Ivy League. I can no longer even depend on my Tigers playing all its football games on Saturdays! I would prefer to watch an untelevised Princeton Dartmouth football game LIVE, sitting in a blizzard, than to see one on TV from the comfort of my couch on a Friday night attended mostly by the TV crew. We pay a price for the ability to see everything all the time while sitting on our a$$.

I know it was very hard to guess where five-star quarterback recruit Malachi Nelson would sign after decommitting from Oklahoma.

Those of you who guessed USC are vindicated.

In other news, dog bites man.

USC has been doing fine at the skill positions.

But they've been recruiting poorly in the trenches. And it shows.

If Riley can't get linemen to come to LA, he won't live up to his contract (and I suspect that he's well-aware of that).

Five-star running back Raleek Brown has signed with a new college after decommitting from Oklahoma earlier this week.

A gold star to any posters who can guess where Brown signed.

It's easier to gain yards when the big guys are creating holes for you.
