(Not all these thoughts apply to our league ... yet)

Largely due to court cases, today's college athletes enjoy more freedom and control of their careers and income than ever before.
And like most things, these paradigm shifts have good and bad consequences.

Players can get paid for their brand … blurring the lines of amateurism, and opening the door to shady recruiting

The $millions that schools, coaches, programs and sponsors make from college sports are now (slowly) being directed to the athletes.

Players are no longer tied to one school by a document they sign when they are 17 years old- … coaches come and go, players struggle for playing time, the portal makes a loyal backup contributor an after-thought ... now players can " use the transfer portal, graduate transfer, or go "old school" and sit out a year. Coaches no longer have "veto authority" on transfer destinations, and players can follow their coaches to a new destination.
HS seniors and HS coaches are now complaining that the portal has squeezed out opportunities, especially at Power 5 schools as coaches are shopping the used car lot (the portal) before buying a new and unproven HS player.

Coaches are saying the new era of transient rosters, makes player development less important. “If you do a great job, the kid will jump to another school”.
Early entry to the NFL or NBA makes bowl games or completing a season with their teammates less important. (This is also happening in high schools).
High schools “talent mills” like IMG Academy, Montverde, and Oak Hill Academy … and the new NBA-sponsored league are a new avenue for HS players to transfer to improve their recruiting options.

Stir in the pressure on coaches to "win now ... or else" and it becomes a very different world for our college athletics.
