U/T just beat the P women by about 20 in Jadwin a few hours ago. Next year we go to them, hopefully anyway.

Too bad all the guys are away by now, but in a different world how cool would it have been had an Ivy been ready to go on a moment's notice? And allowed to play?

Oh boy, this is the nearly the dream scenario.

First of all, remember that with 40 or 41 bowl games in existence now, literally every single FBS team which is bowl eligible (season record of at least 6-6) is already committed to a bowl.

Secondly, all of the logical FCS teams which could theoretically step up have either just completed a four- or five-game FCS playoff gauntlet or are still in the hunt for an FCS national championship. So they're out.

The logical fill-in candidates to play in the Gator Bowl are 5-7 FBS teams or an FCS program which did not qualify for the FCS playoffs. Neither would be an enticing draw unless, in a quirky year, some blue blood like Southern Cal had a terrible season.

Imagine if the players at Dartmouth or Princeton happened to be either still on campus or easily collectible. They've already finished their final exams, so the rationale of interfering with academics no longer flies.

I think that the Gator Bowl would prefer the novelty of a 9-1 D or P this year or, better yet, a 10-0 Princeton team from 2018 to slot in as an opponent. The Gator Bowl organizing committee has no good options. They just want to hold a game so that they can fulfill their obligation to ESPN and cash a check.

The game at kick-off is posting so-so television ratings but, as the Ivy team hangs in there through half-time, ratings start to skyrocket. By the time the game reaches its nailbiting conclusion, ESPN is thrilled with its numbers.

This would have been the year.

Another fantasy scenario: Princeton finishes 2021 undefeated at 10-0. Harvard finishes 9-1. (Sorry, Dartmouth, you suffered two last-minute heart-breaking losses to the Crimson and Tigers on successive November weekends. That's how it goes.)

The bickering over TimeOutGate increases in volume and intensity. Some well-heeled Harvard and Princeton alumni (aren't they all?) contacts the Gator Bowl organizing committee and backstops the gate, then sells junkets to Crimson and Tiger fans to see beautiful Jacksonville or the greater Northeast Florida metroplex in late December.

Boom. I just solved two problems by throwing one stone!
