Subject: Ivy Coaching Comparison

This year Princeton’s Bob Surace joined a select group of only 7 Ivy coaches to win four or more Ivy titles. He did it in his 11th season as HC of Princeton. Here’s how that compares to the other 6 historically great Ivy coaches. The list shows the coach’s name followed by numbers of years it took him to win four Ivy titles:

Berndt: 5
Bagnoli: 9
Colman/Blackman/Cozza: 10
Surace: 11
Restic: 13
Murphy: 14
Teevens: 20

The Berndt achievement is most impressive.

Prior to winning his first title in 1982 Penn had only garnered one Ivy title in 1959.

According to former Dartmouth coach Joe Yucika, several Ivy teams implemented their AI bands immediately in 1981. Penn waited until the last possible minute to do so five years later and won with guys that other Ivies didn't have a prayer of admitting.

After Penn implemented its own AI band as well, the party ended.

The after party has been pretty good.
Penn has won 18 conference championships (all of which in the Ivy League), winning 13 outright and five shared.[7]

Speaking of comparisons, are the salaries of the current Ivy football Head Coaches listed somewhere? I’m curious of the differential from highest to lowest paid and how that relates to their latest W-L records.

My experience shows that total comp packages for highest paid Ivy coaches are state secrets, zealously guarded. Too great a risk of faculty envy and resultant blowback were the true numbers to get out.

Carm Cozza would jokingly (but somewhat ruefully) tell friends that his first contract with Yale, signed in 1965, was three years at $16,500 per year. Back then, there was an ironclad rule that the Yale HC could not be paid as much as a full professor. Rumor has it that full cost of Bagnoli deal with Columbia tops a million per year, when the value of his housing deal is factored in. I think that most would place a big bet that Bagnoli has best package in League, and I would venture that Murphy comes in at no. 2.

Bagnoli at number one makes sense in that Columbia knew it had one chance to hire a coach who had proven beyond any doubt he could win as a head coach in the Ivy League. If Columbia had whiffed on Bagnoli, the next candidate would have been much less desirable and much more risky.

Murphy at number two also makes sense because Amaker essentially raised the ceiling for all Harvard coaches. That’s not to say the benefits would flow to anybody beyond the football coach, but Amaker’s compensation package crossed the Rubicon. No professor would complain about Murphy’s deal because Amaker was already in the stratosphere.

Murphy was paid that before Amaker not other way around. I know that doesn’t fit with the anti-Amaker bent of this board but is true. Murphy has gotten his pay supplemented by booster club before Amaker even showed up.

But you have to admit that several H fans posting here have steadfastly denied Amaker has been paid more than a relatively modest base salary.

When Harvard hired Murphy in 1994 his contact was $75,000 per year. Who knows what it’s today. I presume it’s doubled by now. Football coaches almost always earn more than the AD or any other coach. It’s unlikely that Murphy earns more the their men’s bb coach.
