A lot of very close racing, especially at the Men’s sprints.

Harvard won both Heavies and lights again, but by only 1.5 sec in the lights and 2.5 sec in the heavies over Princeton; heavies avenged an earlier loss.

Ivy women were tight, Princeton avenged an earlier loss to slightly favored Yale by 3.5 sec. Tigers get the auto NCAA bid, but Yale will certainly be there too.

According to our website, P MLR won the Ivy title. This is apparently awarded on a total points basis, even if losing the 1st Varsity race. But apparently you do get a Cup or Medal or something for winning individual races, at least in Women’s open rowing. They edged Y by a point. I find it the “scoring” in rowing confusing so I am happy to be corrected.

Is it that the winner of the 1st V race goes to the NCAAs?

Winner of first varsity race is the nominal Ivy League champion in each case.

Women’s multi-race points winner gets the Ivy auto invite to the NCAAs. Other Ivies are always invited though. Princeton did both this year.

First varsity heavy and light finals winners at Sprints are Ivy champs. Points winners across all races get fancy cups and are “team champions”. Harvard won the two races today, Princeton won both points titles. I would bet all of them qualify for IRAs.

Tiger open women also won the points trophy as well as the V8 race and the LW women won the V8 at its Eastern Sprints regatta. Congrats to the Harvard men for their HW and LW V8 victories, the depth of Princeton’s performance across all of its rowing teams has been impressive this season.

Thanks, Bennie. “Clearing up” is certainly a gracious way to phrase it…

One reason you rarely hear IRA national championship qualifying chatter is that almost everybody does. ALL SIX boats in the Sprints light and heavy finals automatically qualify

The women rowers have the NCAAs.

The heavyweight men, and more recently, the lightweight men and women, have the IRAs (Intercollegiate Rowing Association, founded 1895).

The NCAA declares a championship based on points derived from finishes amongst the 1st and 2nd Varsity 8, and the V 4. The women's programs are organized and race during the season with this format in mind.

The IRA declares national champ based on a single race: the winner of the Varsity 8 Grand Final. That winning boat, and by association, its program, is national champion. There is also a total points trophy for the program that amasses the most of those, based on finishing positions in the finals.

BTW: the current IRA champ, U of Washington, continues a recent trend with but one U.S. national among the crew, including cox. (cox: Australia., stroke: U.S., 7: Ger, 6: Ita, 5: Lith, 4: NZ, 3: UK, 2: NZ, bow: NZ.)

There was some discussion a few years ago regarding merging the two organizations, or, NCAA acquiring the IRA. Thankfully, that talk seems to have died down. Among the issues apparently in contention was the NCAA prohibition of gambling by student-athuletes (stop me from laughing till I cry) as the IRA, indeed men's rowing tradition, has the loser handing his shirt to the victor, a practice known as shirt betting.

Let the regattas proceed!

Congrats to Columbia women, first time to the NCAAs.

The usual suspects, Princeton, Yale and Brown, will be there too. Princeton seeded fourth in both eights, Eli seventh in varsity fours.
