Mike Schafer ’86, who over four decades has become synonymous with Cornell men’s hockey as a player, assistant coach and head coach, has announced that he will retire as the Jay R. Bloom ’77 Head Coach of Men’s Ice Hockey following the 2024-25 season.

Nicki Moore, the Meakem Smith Director of Athletics and Physical Education, has also announced that Casey Jones ’90 – a former Big Red captain and assistant coach, and current head coach at Clarkson University – will succeed Schafer as Cornell’s 13th men’s head coach. Jones will join the Big Red coaching staff this year as associate head coach, before taking the reins next spring.

I admire and appreciate this behind-the-scenes technique of managing a coaching change. Naming the heir apparent as a one-year assistant coach maximizes the chance of a seamless transition. Conducting the hiring of the new guy quietly allows you to go after current head coaches elsewhere without disturbing their relationship with their current players if he or she doesn't take the your job.

I wonder why we see this process so rarely.

I'm guessing it's that many universities have internal policies or externam mandates to post and announce all job openings, then conduct a publicly transparent search.

But the Cornell model is a good one.

The reason is probably because whether or not there is a mandate or guidance from the NCAA or otherwise, many schools believe they usually ought to have an open, not pre-determined search for candidates with a wide pool. This facilitates consideration of minority candidates, among other rationales. Sometimes this is probably undertaken even when the school knows who it is going to pick on day one. And it isn't always followed. Carril named Carmody as the pick to replace him on the day he announced his retirement, for example. Cornell is doing this pre-announcement selection.

This is interesting in that it is not Pete Carril's job, responsibility or even authority to hire his own replacement.

But of course nobody who has spent three decades building one-half of a conference duopoly dynasty is going to just step back and let the program be handed to anybody.

Duke had offered its head coaching job to Tommy Amaker before Mike Krzyzewski picked up the phone to make sure Amaker did not order a moving truck. K had made his own selection of Jon Scheyer and assumed/hoped that his boss would make the same pick. When that didn't happen, Krzyzewski stepped in and forced the issue. His message to Duke, "I've still got an office in the building. Don't think I'm using it to schedule tee times."

For all the issues I have with what Amaker did to academic standards in Ivy basketball recruiting, my heart does break for the man. To be offered the job that you have wanted for decades and have it taken away, that would bring a lesser man to his knees.

No, the way to manage the transition is what Dean Smith did at UNC. Wait until a week before school starts, then quit. That way, you're gonna get your man. You're welcome, Bill Guthridge.

Clarifying my post, he announced his replacement. He did not formally choose him, except insofar as he had earned the deference to have his choice ratified and “chosen” by the AD. When Auriemma retires, he will probably have the same role.

Many alums can still remember Mike Schafer as a Big Red player snapping a hockey stick over his helmet at the start of a game. Schafer has had a great career as both a player and head coach on the East Hill! Rumor has it AD Andy Noel had to up his contract a few times to keep him in Ithaca as many programs wanted his coaching services. Not an easy thing to get done at Cornell, but well deserved. Very happy Mike Schafer is coaching another season to groom the incoming Casey Jones. Thank you Coach Schafer and Go Big Red!
