In reply to: An Observer 's message, "Cooper Flagg" on 12:42:47 07/09/24 Tue

I have been watching his high school games on you tube. He is a generational talent and will make an instant impact for Duke.
He can do it all. He is 6'9" and in addition to his offensive prowess, he is a phenomenal defensive player, shot blocker, passer and rebounder. He was easily the best player on the select team all of whose members are NBA players.
If you are interested, go to you tube and search for him. He was a member of Montverde's basketball team. Every starter on the team was a 5 star.

Right on cue, right now ESPNU is running "I Hate Christian Laettner." This is one of the very best "30 For 30" segments. Laettner's an interesting guy with a more complex story than one might believe. A viewer is inclined to be more sympathetic to him after watching this piece.

It's interesting to hear so many of the people interviewed talk about Duke being hated in basketball for being too elite, too rich and too white. When one looks at Duke from the perspective of Ivy institutions, who traditionally have been thought of as elite, rich and white, one better understands the complicated emotions people hold toward our alma maters.

That documentary either came out right before, or was made during, Laettner was sued for fraud over a failed real estate development in Durham.

My understanding is that he made a series of other poor business decisions that resulted in investors taking some serious losses....

Yes, after he retired from the NBA, Laettner got into the real estate development business and it did not go well. Besides allegations of fraud and lawsuits aplenty (Laettner sued his OWN company Blue Devil Ventures for $10 million), he flirted with personal bankruptcy.

During the worst of it about a decade ago, Laettner auctioned off many items from his career memorabilia, including the jersey believed to have been worn when he corraled Grant Hill's three-quarter court pass, faked right and then spun to his left before releasing perhaps the most famous shot in college basketball history.

What do you think that Duke jersey, with unproven provenance, fetched in 2014?

$119,500.

And I don't think Laettner is that complicated a guy. He was an excellent college player (one of the best). He had a respectable professional career. He relied on his reputation to convince others to make investments in a field that he probably didn't know that much about, with predictably poor results.
