The Columbia varsity heavyweight crew made the Grande Final set for tomorrow at the IRA National Championship. Columbia was the only Ivy to make the final. The other Grande Final boats will be Cal, Stanford, Wisconsin, Northeastern, and Washington.

Go Lions!

because...

1) crew is the oldest sport in the ivy league
2) the henley regatta is one of the premier sporting events of its kind
3) Penn ain't going.

As a distant 6th place college finisher, Lions don't belong in this event either and will get waxed early.

Hard to say a team doesn't belong when it gets invited. Especially when the supposed 'powers' get left home.

It's so funny that the rest of this league can't stand Columbia success. I guess people fear the loss of a presumed victory in all sports.

Today Henley... tomorrow...

in advance, then no one posts the final results, like baseball. If you were not a front runner you wouldn't be afraid to keep everyone informed. Reality is that no one said other ivy teams would fare any better, you were the one who made the gloating crack about Penn not going, and a 6th place US team is not going to make many waves at Henley. Have fun.

The results are the second post on this thread.

Also, to "not to worry," unless you're a graduate of Wisconsin, Washington, Cal, Northeastern or Stanford, you haven't much of a leg to stand on, have you?

Baseball results below were only for first game, ending with post enttiled something like "let's not post any more." There weren't any second game results posted.

Got plenty of legs to stand on, never claimed Columbia was worse than other ivy teams or that other ivy teams would do any better at Henley, did I? Only that they were 6th place finisher, well behind winners, and Henley will be a tough competition for them.

Please... Don't even try suggesting that you weren't gleefully suggesting that Columbia didn't belong there with infantile jibes like, "Have fun."

And you said, "like baseball", indicating that you were drawing a parallel to crew. Internetter posted those results. You're wrong. Man up to it, or be another useless cybergoon like foehi.

You know, I've often wondered myself why some posters on this board seem to have an issue with Columbia. One would think that, given the Lions' relatively modest success historically, Columbia would be everyone's buddy, the unthreatening guy you don't mind introducing to your girlfriend because you know that there's no way she would be interested in him.

I've always felt that the Columbia fans here are great. Their energy, devotion and seemingly boundless optimism are inspiring.

At first, I assumed that the posters who have a problem with Columbia -- one in particular -- must have been rejected as applicants in high school. But he has recently said that isn't the case and I take him at face value.

More recently, I hypothesize that some of us, myself included sometimes, are actually envious of the Columbia fans. You guys get more excitement, more enjoyment and more mileage out of winning the Gehrig Division in baseball or sending a heavyweight crew to Henley than fans of other schools get out of winning much bigger prizes. Princeton won nine Ivy titles this year, but I suspect that most Tiger fans would consider 2007-08 disappointing, probably more than a little disappointing. At some level in our collective psyches, I think many posters on this board wish that they found as much to celebrate about 2007-08 as you guys do.

Well, I say keep on keepin' on, fellas. Sports should be about celebrating triumphs, seeing the glass half full and having fun.

I'm not a rowing expert, just covered some races for Spec a long time ago, but it's my understanding that being invited to the Henley Regatta is a great honor, that they don't seek out crappy teams, and that CU hasn't been in the Henley periscope for ages.
Therefore, not to puff up the Lions, but to acknowledge
their skill, spirit and hard work, I say congratulations and have a great time.

The "distant 6th place finisher" you mentioned was only two seconds behind the fourth place finisher. How can you disparage Columbia's performance in the finals over a two second difference. Most important, the Columbia Heavyweight Crew was the only Ivy League Crew to qualify for the Grande Final. Clearly, Columbia deserves to be in the Henley Regatta.

Well, that just takes the proverbial cake. I have seen some smack tossed our way, but this beats all.

We are in the Henley, one of the most prestigious sporting events. Plus it is a great experience for these Columbia Student Athletes. No one can tell what the final outcome will be - so you can surmise that Columbia won't do well, but that remains to be seen.

More sour grapes from some posters... a bumper crop in fact.

FYI - I posted the "let's not post anymore" during the NCAA baseball tournament. I was disappointed with the overall results, but very proud of our team getting to the tournament at all. How far to other Ivy teams to in say, basketball? Aside from Princeton beating UCLA - lately?

It could be that Dr. Murphy's efforts on behalf of Columbia athletics are bearing fruit, and yes, it appears that some people can't stand that.

Fellow posters - check the rules on the top of this web site. Show some class!

regards,
Lion Rooter

Too bad that the official Ivy website hasn't posted an article on the Henley invitation even though the Columbia AD website has had the release since yesterday. Spec's, which has been updated occasionally, also has nothing on it, both as of 2:30PM, ET, 6/11.

The Cornell lightweights, who reached the finals of Henley two of the last trhee years, are also going for the fourth straight year. They have won three straight IRA national titles, the first program to ever do that.

Not only does the Ivy site fail to note the BR lights going to Henley but the Cornell AD page, too! Maybe the latter is on vacation since the last story is dated June 2.

I have seen enormous growth in foehi in recent months. While it is true that his views toward Columbia have in the past bordered on the pathological, I have sensed a sort of cri de coeur about the recent mediocrity of Penn athletics, masked by a rather mild upbraiding of Columbia fans. Progress in some cases comes in small, indeed infantile, steps.

Harumph. What you are sensing is a cri de spleen about Penn athletics which have been not mediocre but crappy lately. Bilski has been in the job too long. New blood is needed. We are becoming Columbiaesque

It's a big deal to those who are participating!

Am I correct that in the understanding that the "Ivy" Rowing Champ is usually determined at the Eastern Sprints?

We went over this in the thread in which you and I debated whether it made more sense for the winner of the varsity eight race (Yale) or the overall points winner at the NCAA championship (Brown) to be designated "NCAA champion."

The "Ivy League champion" is always determined by the varsity eight race at Eastern sprints. If the winner is a non-Ivy team, then the next highest finishing Ivy team is the "Ivy League champion." Furthermore, the nine members of that specific crew, including the cox, are designated "First-Team All-Ivy."

The overall points winner at Easterns receives the Rowe Cup but is not called the meet champion. In dual meets, both the "winner" of the meet and the Cup being contested go to the winner of the varsity eight race, not the overal points winner. So the practice of the NCAA meet truly is an outlier.

Maybe they'll win, maybe not, doesn't matter. Either way it's news, same as any other team being invited to an event, and kids are being given a chance to do something fun and worthwhile. Like many others here, I participated in such activities in college and am glad to have had the opportunity. There's no reason to rain on their parade.
