We would be silly not to give AD Mike Goldberger the benefit of the doubt on his choice. I heard that Jesse Agel, excuse me, Coach Agel, was greatly respected by the players as well as people in the business. He certainly paid his dues and showed great loyalty by his 17 year commitment to Vermont, where he was responsible for recruiting many of the players who turned that program into a good mid-major. And he understands what's it like to recruit at a smaller school, and now no doubt has a feel for recruiting in the Ivy League. Although we lost our two outstanding guards, he has some good talent returning, as well as a very decent recruiting class, many of whom no doubt had their college choice influenced by Coach Agel, as well as Robinson. (I'm curious if he can get Bill Weaver back in the recruiting fold. He withdrew his commitemt a few months ago, and has yet to land anywhere. Perhaps he was also waiting to see who the Bears hired).
Agel is also a known commodity. I often wonder if assistant coaches from big-time programs really understand what it will be like to recruit with no scholarships, smaller budgets, etc, than what they are accustomed to.
Personally, I was hoping to see Tim O'Shea become the new coach. But for some reason(s) he did not. Perhaps he was never truely interested. But I have great confidence in "Goldie", as a decision maker and a judge of character and ability. I never met any of the applicants. Goldie did, and he chose Jesse Agel. That's good enough for me.
