The "distant 6th place finisher" you mentioned was only two seconds behind the fourth place finisher. How can you disparage Columbia's performance in the finals over a two second difference. Most important, the Columbia Heavyweight Crew was the only Ivy League Crew to qualify for the Grande Final. Clearly, Columbia deserves to be in the Henley Regatta.

Well, that just takes the proverbial cake. I have seen some smack tossed our way, but this beats all.

We are in the Henley, one of the most prestigious sporting events. Plus it is a great experience for these Columbia Student Athletes. No one can tell what the final outcome will be - so you can surmise that Columbia won't do well, but that remains to be seen.

More sour grapes from some posters... a bumper crop in fact.

FYI - I posted the "let's not post anymore" during the NCAA baseball tournament. I was disappointed with the overall results, but very proud of our team getting to the tournament at all. How far to other Ivy teams to in say, basketball? Aside from Princeton beating UCLA - lately?

It could be that Dr. Murphy's efforts on behalf of Columbia athletics are bearing fruit, and yes, it appears that some people can't stand that.

Fellow posters - check the rules on the top of this web site. Show some class!

regards,
Lion Rooter

Too bad that the official Ivy website hasn't posted an article on the Henley invitation even though the Columbia AD website has had the release since yesterday. Spec's, which has been updated occasionally, also has nothing on it, both as of 2:30PM, ET, 6/11.

The Cornell lightweights, who reached the finals of Henley two of the last trhee years, are also going for the fourth straight year. They have won three straight IRA national titles, the first program to ever do that.

Not only does the Ivy site fail to note the BR lights going to Henley but the Cornell AD page, too! Maybe the latter is on vacation since the last story is dated June 2.

Not to rain on the magnificent accomplishments of the Columbia crew, but there are Ivy boats at Henley every year. It is hardly noteworthy.

We should all know by now that Foehi is an incorrigible character who thrives on the reactions he gets from Lion fans. Best to ignore him.

I have seen enormous growth in foehi in recent months. While it is true that his views toward Columbia have in the past bordered on the pathological, I have sensed a sort of cri de coeur about the recent mediocrity of Penn athletics, masked by a rather mild upbraiding of Columbia fans. Progress in some cases comes in small, indeed infantile, steps.

Harumph. What you are sensing is a cri de spleen about Penn athletics which have been not mediocre but crappy lately. Bilski has been in the job too long. New blood is needed. We are becoming Columbiaesque

You have a lot of real fans out there who feel your pain. And your grace under pressure of late has been a standard to which all of us should be measured.

It's a big deal to those who are participating!

Am I correct that in the understanding that the "Ivy" Rowing Champ is usually determined at the Eastern Sprints?

We went over this in the thread in which you and I debated whether it made more sense for the winner of the varsity eight race (Yale) or the overall points winner at the NCAA championship (Brown) to be designated "NCAA champion."

The "Ivy League champion" is always determined by the varsity eight race at Eastern sprints. If the winner is a non-Ivy team, then the next highest finishing Ivy team is the "Ivy League champion." Furthermore, the nine members of that specific crew, including the cox, are designated "First-Team All-Ivy."

The overall points winner at Easterns receives the Rowe Cup but is not called the meet champion. In dual meets, both the "winner" of the meet and the Cup being contested go to the winner of the varsity eight race, not the overal points winner. So the practice of the NCAA meet truly is an outlier.
