Subject: Time for Change--Yale's new President

Earlier this week, Josh Beckenstein, Chair of the Yale Corporation, announced the selection of Maurie McInnis as Yale's 24th President. It will be interesting to see how this decision impacts Ivy sports. Dr. McInnis has an undergraduate degree from U.Va. and a Yale Ph.D. She was Asst Provost at U.Va., then Provost at University of Texas, Austin, before becoming President of Stony Brook in the State system of universities in New York. Each of these institutions has healthy athletic programs, and I believe Stony Brook has participated in the FCS football tournament. The appointment comes at a time when the turmoil at various Ivy campuses, with resultant leadership instability, has caused some to think that the prior stonewall against postseason football might crumble.

Under her tenure Stony Brook’s football record was an abysmal 8-28 including 0-10 last year.

The Ivy president has absolutely no impact on athletics at Yale. Unless they Ivy League disbanded, it is what it is.

If the bottom line of the above comments is that Yale’s prexy has no influence on sports in general or football in particular, there is real world data indicating otherwise. I am referring to the two Ivy Football crowns won in the 20 year Levin reign and the 4 FB championships (plus multiple national championships in HW crew, hockey and lax)during Salovey’s 11 yrs at the helm. Levin couldn’t care less about sports, while his successor was an enthusiastic supporter. The tone is set at the top!

It is the 8 presidents, not the ADs or the Commissioner who set parameters for athletics in this conference, among other things. The new Prexy at Yale (along with those incoming at Harvard, Cornell, Penn and perhaps other places) can be a big force for change.

It's also worth noting that the demise of the Pac-12 is all at the hands of those schools' presidents, who botched the Larry Scott/TV Rights situation so badly, that Stanford now competes in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
