With baseball and men's golf winning Ivy championships, men's tennis coming in second, the heavyweight crew finishing its dual meet season 9-1 (including its first Blackwell cup against Penn and Yale since the 1940's and its first win over Navy since the 1960's), and the men's lacrosse club winning a national chamionship things appear to be changing on Morningside Heights -- and all these sports are played at Baker Field or elsewhere. Maybe that success will carry over to basketball and football?

Again.....says all I do is blame Ivy athletic departments. Well if you don't advocate for yourself (your school), then you're not going draw fans or media attention.

Here's an example of what the Syracuse University athletic department does to promote their teams. Sure they may be more "big time", but there's no reason we can't do the same thing.

- Orange Club
- Orange Sports Spotlight
- Orange Varsity Club
- Orange Kids Club
- Cuse Cares Community Service
- Syracuse ISP Sports which is a partnership with Time Warner Cable.

I am not saying the Ivy League needs to be like Syracuse or Notre Dame, but we could certainly do a lot better job of promoting ourselves.

That may mean something in Ithaca - but how does one "promote" in Boston, New York and Philadelphia without spending tons of cash? Even if Columbia goes 10-0 in football and 27-0 in basketball, the giants and knicks will still lead every new york daily. that's the fact.

If that happens, the world will end and it won't matter

Hey Huh....Yale (which is basically a NY suburb and former home of the NY Jets) and Harvard in Boston traditionally lead the Ivy League in home football attendance every year. So I don't understand your arguement.

In 2006 and 2007, Cornell football had 5-5 identical records, but in 2007 the Cornell athletic department made a real effort to improve attendance and drew over 10K for their first three home games and averaged just shy of 9K for the season, compared to 5K average the previous year.

Additionally, Cornell really did an excellent job of promoting basketball this past season and we had sell-out or near sell-out crowds all season. This is a team that previously drew crowds in the 500 - 600 range. Sure we won the league but we didn't know that back in November. Additionally the Cornell basketball team received much better media coverage this season as well. Same goes for our lacrosse team.

So whether it's Columbia baseball (great job Lions!) or any other Ivy team, if we advocate for our teams we'll get better attendance which leads to better media coverage, which ultimately leads to better recruiting, and better quality play. Go Ivy League!!!

I don't disagree that the Ivies do a pretty poor job promoting their teams. However, Cornell and Yale have a bit of an advantage over the others (except Dartmouth). There is absolutely nothing else to do in Ithaca or New Haven. There is a lot else to do in NY, Phil, Boston and even Providence. Hanover is another story.

Maybe because they alternate the only game of interest in the league every year....

The H/Y game skews attendance figures completely.

Yale is 2 hours from NYC (the Giants played in the Yale bowl for 2 years while Giants stadium was being built), so they do not lose fans to pro sports. In addition they do a good job of marketing to attract the family crowd . It helps that the Yale-Harvard game attracts 50k every year. Winning is also the best tool to attact fans. If CU had a winning tradition we would easily attract 3 or 4 k more fans . This year Cornell basketball was predicted to win the league and they were coming off of a 9-5 year in 2007.

Yale has tradionally done a good job of promoting the football program including commercials for upcoming games on local tv stations. Being close to NYC definitely helps but there are also lot of Yalies living conveniently close by to go to the games. A good number live in nearby Ct. towns and quite a few from NJ and Mass have season tickets.

Columbia has a student-run men's lacrosse team that does not have varsity status. It won the national club title -- was that last year? They're trying to get recognized by the athletic dept. Saw it in the Spec.

Based only on a couple of trips to Princeton and Yale, I suspect Columbia's ticket prices are far in excess of the rest of the league. If CU charged the $5.00 Princeton charges, I wonder what the crowds would be like?

I doubt ticket prices have much to do with Columbia attendance.

Their prices, relative to the marketplace, are pretty low. Less than the cost of a movie ticket.

I agree that ticket prices, at around $15 and $10, are too high, especially for a long-struggling program. Bringing them down a notch or two would probably result in more revenue in the long run from the increased attendance that I'm sure would result. Further comments?

Add to the ticket price 20$ for parking and 5 bucks for a hotdog and it gets to be an expensive outing. Fordham was much less expensive to go to.

There can't be many people in New York who would be swayed by a $5 seat rather than a $10 seat. These are people who are used to triple-digit prices for Knicks, Rangers, Giants, etc.

I'm in DC, and I'd happily take my four-year old daughter to Georgetown Women's BB games ($5), American Basketball games ($10) and Georgetown FB games (free) rather than overpriced Wizards, Redskins, or Caps games.

I'm thinking less about alumni attendance and more about neighborhood guys who have families and are priced out of pro sports, youth programs, and sports buffs who are looking for thing to do with kids.
