I think that practice has become pretty common. For example, Cornell men's hockey coach Mike Schafer has been doing that since he came to Ithaca in 1996.

Thanks for the response, Faithful... I did not mean to imply that this must be unique to either Tierney or P'ton. It just sort of sparked an interest... It is obvious that the better coaches have things in their playbooks that inspire the team more than the hope of a positively one-sided W/L ledger.

I should have ended with a request for input regarding what some of the "top" coaches a the ivies have done to meld a melange of "stars" into a "whole that is greater than the sum of its parts" at an emotional level.
