When an individual writes a statement that can be interpreted in multiple ways one can assume that the original author wrote the statement with one meaning in mind. Being that this is a riddle, not a joke as some of you have stated, I would suggest accepting the word nothing in the context of "no thing". The riddle makes more sense that way. I feel that my assumption is correct because the word "nothing" maintains the same meaning throughout the entire riddle. If the word "nothing" was interpreted as an entity you can begin to see that is does not make sense. Remember that the answer needs to make sense throughout a riddle to qualify as a valid answer for that riddle.

For the following example, let's assume the answer "Nothing" is an entity. We'll call this entity, "A pack of Marlboro Lights."

What is greater than God, A pack of Marlboro Lights
More evil than the devil, A pack of Marlboro Lights
The poor have it, A pack of Marlboro Lights
The rich need it, A pack of Marlboro Lights
And if you eat it, you'll die? A pack of Marlboro Lights

Ok, so maybe if you eat a pack of Marlboro Lights you will die. I think you see the point. Nothing when interpreted as "no thing" makes sense throughout the entire riddle.

What is greater than God, No thing
More evil than the devil, No thing
The poor have it, No thing
The rich need it, No thing
And if you eat it, you'll die? No thing

No thing is greater than God.
No thing is more evil than the devil.
The poor have no thing(s).
The rich do not need anything (no thing(s)).
If you do not eat, you will die (eat no thing(s)).

Look at that, I justified my opinion without defecating on anyone's face!

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is my two cents!
