A man must cross a river that is too fast for man or beast to swim…he must use the small boat that is available. He has a fox, a chicken, and a bag of seed with him and must get them across as well. Unfortunately the boat is very small and can only hold him and one other item. When he crosses he can take either the fox, or the chicken, or the bag of seed but no more than one at a time. If he leaves the chicken with the seed, the chicken will eat the seed and that cannot happen. If he leaves the chicken with the fox, the fox will eat the chicken and that cannot happen. The fox will not eat the seed…he does not like seed. One bit of good news, the fox nor the chicken will run away. Of course he can make more than one trip but that means that at times two of the items will be left on shore together. How is he going to get across the river with all three? If he loses any item the evil queen (as in Alice in Wonderland) will pronounce….OFF WITH HIS HEAD!!!! He would very much like to keep his head and he knows not what to do. Can you help him?

Not allowed:

There are no cages available and no materials to build the cage with nor tools with which to build.

Fox cannot swim nor can the chicken…they must be in the boat when they cross…chicken cannot fly. No animals will be killed.

The river is too wide to throw anything across.

The seed cannot get wet so you can not drag the bag of seed out of the boat. The seed must cross in the boat and cannot be carried on his head…in the boat and he cannot sit on the seed. The seed cannot be scattered…it must remain in the bag.

He does not have rope available…only has the boat that he can row. The oar will not reach across the river.

Chicken cannot be left with the seed….or the chicken will eat the seed and that cannot happen.

The fox cannot be left with the chicken or the fox will eat the chicken and that cannot happen.

Good note….neither the chicken nor the fox will run off….don’t ask me why…they just won’t. They cannot be tied to anything though.
