to make the problem simpler, let us consider one (1) man and two (2) boys for the same situation.

For all of them to be able to cross the river:

- the two boys will cross the river first
illustration:
___M____ ,,,,,,,,,, ____BB____

- then, one of the boys will go back
illustration:
___MB___ ,,,,,,,,,, ____B_____

- then the man will cross the river
illustration:
____B___ ,,,,,,,,,, ____MB____

- then the boy on the other side (the right side of the illustration) will cross the river going back
illustration:
___BB___ ,,,,,,,,,, ____M_____

- finally, the two boys will cross the river
illustration:
________ ,,,,,,,,,, ____MBB___

The process is the same for nine men and two boys, only that the two boys will be crossing the river forth and back several more times.
