I agree and disagree.

People need to explain their world in terms that they can live with. The idea that reality is a sequence of semi-random events, that humans are no more special than bacteria, that Earth is just a rock in space, is truly distressing to many, and shouldn't it be? I try to resist (and don't do it well) the idea that not seeing the world in theistic terms somehow makes me smarter / better / more attuned than those who see gods and spirits driving things.

Religion has supplied a lot of good, and a lot of bad, to the world, and will undoubtedly continue to do so well past our lifetimes.
