Subject: Being a moral Athiest
In reply to: Graham 's message, "Re: what are the reasons for being an athiest?" on 20:24:24 09/21/02 Sat

I suppose what I have to say will not be of use to the person who started this discussion. However if anyone like my self cares to read, here it is.
It took me a long time to come to grips with what I believed. I went to church regularly as a child, but when I got to be a teenager I realized that too many things just didn't fit. Why do wonderful church going people die of cancer at age 30, and assholes like Sadaam live to be 70? I eventually decided that church was there simply to comfort those who needed security, in every respect. The fact that I'm athiest doesn't make me bad. I treat myself and others with more respect than probably half the people close to my age.(18) What does the average college student do? Go out party, drink, do drugs, have promiscuous sex. But if they go to church it somhow makes it ok. And it's athiests who get crap about being immoral. Personally I've never been drunk, high, or smoked a cigarette. As for sex, how else do we reproduce. I don't have premiscuous sex. What's wrong with safe sex? I'd rather respect myself than a god that doesn't give a shit. If I can live my life the best I can, always strive to improve, and treat others (who deserve it) with respect, then I will die a happy man. God is best left to those who need it.
