Boy Coolie, those are some hard hittin' reasons for denying there's a God. I would certainly say there are some deep down suppressed feelings there. God and the Bible are not dismissed easily. Sure the bible is a kind a fairy tale, yet it has been found to be quite accurate with regards to the historical academics crowd. How were the people back then to know of the dinosaures or carbon dating techniques? They had to make a theory that worked for the times. And the wars of the bible DO have a logic to them. Had the biblical warriors conquered their enemies and kept the women, cattle, and money they would be "conquerers" and it could be said they were out for the same rewards as the Romans ie profit, and greed, etc. Chaos and anarchy ruled back then much more than now. Picture todays world without the UN or America to stop the evil-doers... Destroying Hitler with fire bombing and atomics of the Japanese did include destruction of EVERYTHING. Just like in the bible. Our cause was Just. And destroying the enemy's herds and lands in biblical times was a sure way to prevent the spread of disease that a "dirty" or unsanitary evil enemy "without a God" might contain.
As for the DeadSea scrolls, who is to say that the scroll writers didn't have and anti-christian bent? If you dare to look into modern history through the writings of a Soviet historian you will certainly find a likeness of reality, but not one with the ideals set forth by an American across the ocean!
It comes down to personal choice. I have a belief that men and women that reject religion also reject authority and a certain responsibility for their actions. Adultery for example; one that cannot stop doing it attempts to find the single, however tiny, reasoning to justify the action. It is a way of clearing a troubled conscience as well; I am not caught by the flesh and blood authority, and I have ruled out the possibility of consequences after death, therefore I can continue to commit the hurtful action. Justify is another word for excuse. Think about it.
And what harm does a belief in religion have on a person? I think the jury is in, most people of the many common religions are very good citizens of the world and are known to do good things for no reward at all. Sure there are examples of evil shrouded with religious justification but these are not reason enough. None more than corrupt police or politicians. The system works, so does religion. Religion makes the believers do right and good when there is no other reason to do so and it can give you Hope and comfort when nothing else can. Thanks for reading my thoughts. Callus Clyde Ball
