.....and what if HE doesn't exist? Who is going to help this kid? He obviously needs someone to guide him and make him feel he has "value" in this world.

I would never argue against the fact that religion helps people do this......but it is the "people" who do it.....not "Him". Religion provides a sense of community, but it may or may not be "the truth" some of us search for.
