Big Hair's distinctive brand of sonic-bass driven supercharged house and tech-funk with its twist of wry humour has won them many fans worldwide. On Radio 1 alone Pete Tong, Mary Nightingale, Seb Fontaine and Lottie have all succumbed to their charms. Their underground fans include Mr.C who regularly books them for The End and Nathan Coles & Terry Francis who have played with Big Hair at the legendary Wiggle nights, including several bi-monthly dates at Fabric. Big Hair’s tracks have been licensed to compilations from DJs including Peace Division, Howie B, Didier Sinclair and John Marsh. Also they’ve played alongside Deep Dish, DJ Sneak, Derrick Carter, Lee Burridge, Lee Coombs, Gene Farris, D’Julz, Kevin Saunderson to name a few. Chris and Aaron started Big Hair in 1995 and began by releasing on Kontraband. They swiftly received dance floor recognition with such tech-house anthems as ‘Dougie At the Ockie’, their Le Grande Boofant alter ego work on Wiggle and collaborations with Ben Chapman for Visitor and Nathan Coles for Surreal. Big Hair’s highly acclaimed second album ‘Sold Down The River’ on U-Freqs (Best Album DJ Mag UK) was a live mix of releases on their own U-Freqs label, showcasing what they do and how they do it in a club. Gutterfunk have managed to pin them down in between a hectic European tour schedule and festival gigs for an exclusive date at Gutterfunk. Kicking off the night will be Friendly Pete from Subsdance Sound System. Pete has been DJ’ing for around 14 years and was inspired by underground parties such as Aphrodisiac Sound System and the DIY party movement. He got involved with friends organizing field parties and progressed to running and guesting at sound systems in Kent and Yorkshire, as well as organizing one off’s in Brixton and Lydd to boot. In 1998 Pete hooked up with TVC sound system from Kent and today Peter is resident and runs the Subsdance parties and has played records far a field as France, Prague and all across the UK. He describes his style as ‘crystal tipped house music’, dubby vocal tinged, deep house. Between this month’s guests, your residents Foot Therapy will be shuffling your feet in formidable fashion ahead of Big Hair’s live session to close out the night. Gutterfunk is 3rd Saturday of every month at Medicine, 89 Great Eastern St, London.
