CEDAR CITY -- Southern Utah University's women's gymnastics team claimed its third straight academic national championship with the team's second-highest grade point average of all-time at 3.760 during the 2002-03 academic year.

The Thunderbirds have won four of the last five academic national championships overall and have earned the honor six times in the last 10 years. The award is presented annually by the

National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches (NACGC).

All 13 Thunderbird gymnasts were named academic all-American with eight of those posting GPAs of 3.80 or above, led by sophomore Megan Crane at 3.95 and sophomore Molly Bauer and freshman Nichole

Cummings each at 3.91.

Sophomore Carly Geronimo finished the year at 3.90, followed by seniors Jayme Morgan at 3.89, Sandi Lyman at 3.87 and Talayna Fortunato at 3.84 and junior Charity Wink at 3.82. Senior Sarah Geisler checked in at 3.64 with freshman Rachel Tanner at 3.62, freshman Sheena Shaw at 3.55, senior Cayce Overstreet at 3.51 and junior Jessiann Andrus rounded out SUU's academic all-America list at 3.47.

"I think that this was a very special one for us because every single member of the team was an academic all-American and with all the success that we've had academically, that has never happened," coach Scott Bauman said. "From an athletic standpoint, this team was the best we ever had in the program's history and our record shows that.

They wanted to win athletically and academically and that says a lot about the character and type of athletes we have on our team.

"This is an outstanding honor for our gymnastics program," SUU Athletic Director Tom Douple said. "Congratulations to our student-athletes and coaches for their great efforts. To win this honor six of the last 10 years and to have all 13 of our gymnasts be named academic all-Americans speaks highly of the type of student-athletes involved in our program."

SUU finished ahead of second-place Cornell, which had a team GPA of 3.6741, while the University of Utah placed third at 3.6357.

Meanwhile, in-state rivals Brigham Young (3.4600) and Utah State (2.9988) finished 11th and 62nd, respectively, on the list.

Southern Utah, which set a team record with a 3.78 GPA in winning the title last season, also claimed academic championships in 1994, 1997, 1999 and 2001, with second-place finishes in 1993, 1995, 1998 and 2000 and a third-place finish in 1996. In 1998 SUU finished first among Division I schools but was second overall behind Division II Winona State.
