Thunderbirds Ink Two More To Letters Of Intent

Southern Utah University has signed two men’s basketball players to national letters of intent, Head Coach Bill Evans announced Wednesday. The Thunderbirds signed DeAngelo Newsom from Northwest (Wyo.) College and Jeff Martini, from Sheridan (Wyo.) College.

Newsom, a 6-foot-5, 210-pound forward from Memphis, Tenn., earned first-team all-Wyoming Conference, first-team all-Region IX and second team junior college all-America honors last year at Northwest College after averaging 17.3 points and 8.6 rebounds for the Trappers. He hit .606 percent of his shots from the field and .357 percent of his 3-point attempts last year as well. As a freshman Newsom earned all-conference honorable mention after averaging 14.6 points and a league-leading 9.4 rebounds per game.

Martini, a 6-2, 190-pound guard from Sheridan, Wyo., averaged 13.1 points, 3.5 assists and 3.5 rebounds for the Wyoming Conference champion Generals last year. He led the team in steals with 72 and hit .428 percent of his field goals (.380 from 3-point range) last year.

“We think we’ve really helped ourselves by signing both DeAngelo and Jeff,” Evans said. “DeAngelo is a guy who can really score around the basket. He’ll bring some athleticism, which is something we’re always looking for, and he comes to us from a good JC program. He also has the type of character and attitude we look for.

“Jeff is a guy who might not have eye-popping stats but everyone talks about his energy and toughness, two things I’m always looking for,” Evans pointed out. “He led their team in steals, was second in assists and third in scoring and he played on a couple of very successful teams at Sheridan. He brings a lot of the intangibles we look for and he’s another young guy with the right kind of character and attitude for our team.”

The signing of Newsom and Martini brings SUU’s 2003 recruiting class to four after the early signings of center Vaughn Schouten and guard Dallas Rensch last December. Evans said the Thunderbirds are still looking to sign one player.

Thunderbird Men Sign Two During Early Period

Southern Utah University has signed two men’s basketball players to national letters of intent. The Thunderbirds received letters from Vaughn Schouten, a 6-foot-9, 250-pound center from Orem, Utah, and Dallas Rensch, a 6-2, 175-pound point guard from Mesa, Arizona.

Schouten, who is currently serving an LDS church mission in Ohio, played one year at Utah Valley State after graduating from Orem High School in 2000. During his season at UVSC (2000-01) Schouten appeared in all 31 games, starting the final six and eight overall. He averaged 4.5 points and 2.3 rebounds while hitting .495 percent of his shots and was named the team’s most improved player. He will enter Southern Utah as sophomore.

Rensch is a senior at Mesa’s Mountain View High School where he averaged 16.2 points, four rebounds and four assists during his junior season when he helped lead the Toros to a league title and a berth in the state playoffs where they lost to eventual state champion Marcos de Niza. He earned first-team all-East Valley Conference and all-state recognition for his efforts.

“We’re excited about both Dallas and Vaughn,” SUU Coach Bill Evans said. “They’re a couple of guys who will really help our program.

“Vaughn is a guy who will bring some physical presence; he’s a big strong kid,” Evans pointed out. “Any time you have a chance to get size like his you have to take advantage of it. Another good thing about Vaughn is he comes here after spending a year in a quality junior college program but he will still have three years of eligibility in our program.

“We think Dallas is a guy who can play the point for us in the future,” Evans added. “He’s a smart player who understands the game and loves to play. He also comes to us from a good program where he’s had a lot of success and learned to be a winner. We feel very fortunate to have signed him”
