Global Sports Tops Thunderbirds

Boxscore

CEDAR CITY, Utah -- DeAngelo Newsom scored 20 points and David Palmer and Jason Baker added 19 apiece Tuesday night but their efforts weren’t quite enough as Global Sports slipped by Southern Utah in the Thunderbirds’ first exhibition game of the year, 85-80. Former Oklahoma State and Dixie State star Maurice Baker scored 20 points and Adrian Peterson, another OSU alumnus, added 18 to lead Global Sports.

In a close game that saw 12 lead changes and five ties the biggest play of the game came with 42 seconds remaining and Global Sports hanging on to an 81-78 lead. Palmer drove the lane but his shot was rejected by yet another Oklahoma State alum, Antoine Broxsie. The carom was corralled by Changa Adams (Northeastern) and Global Sports hit four of six free throws in the final seconds to hang on for the win.

“I saw a lot of things I liked tonight but there were a lot of things we need to work on,” SUU Coach Bill Evans said. “We just didn’t make enough shots, really, but I was more disappointed with our defense than I was with our offense. We didn’t defend well enough but that gives the guys something to work on. We can look at the tape, show the guys what they’re doing then get to work on those areas.

“I liked a of of guys out there tonight though,” he added. “David [Palmer] looked good in the first half but he probably played too many minutes, at 38. Robbie [Warren] did some good things and I liked the way DeAngelo [Newsom] and Jason [Baker] played most of the time. We’ve got a starting point now, we just need to use it to get better, which is what these [exhibition] games are all about.”

Southern Utah out-shot Global Sports .508-.475 and out-rebounded them 41-33 but Global hit 11-of-20 3-pointers while the Thunderbirds hit just 3-of-16.

“We’re a much better 3-point shooting team than you saw tonight,” Evans noted. “David [Palmer] is a good 3-point shooter, Jason [Baker] is a good 3-point shooter and we have other guys who can shoot the three. They shot it very well from long-range though, and that was a key to the ballgame.”
