Not exactly sure why O'Toole left unless he felt he still was not going to get adequate playing time behind LaFalce which I think would have been a mistake on his part. In reality (and I'm only guessing), I think O'Toole lost some of his passion for playing football and then a little home-sickness may have come into play. I'm thinking that's why he transferred to U of K to be closer to home without playing any more football.

Just wanted to add that I would look for an announcement on the new DC late this week or early next week. Coach P is on vacation, but I expect an announcement as soon as he returns. I still say Parker should(and will) win out. But, nothing is ever certain, especially in the football program right now.

Any new potential transfers knocking on the doors of the football offices? Hopefully a QB and some defensive players.

I know the coaching staff is looking for some more transfers, but you can't really know for sure until school starts and see who shows up to enroll. The only one I know about is 6'6" QB Will Ducey who was a redshirt walk-on at Ole Miss last season. Problem is, he hasn't really seen any game action for almost two years. From what I understand, he broke his leg early in his senior year at Belleville Althoff and missed most of the season. He kind of fell off of everybody's radar at that point. Ole Miss gave him a chance to walk-on, but I think he wanted to get closer to home and a realistic chance to play. Time will tell how good he is or can be. He will have four years of eligibility at Western. The other QB coming in is Eric Schultz from Harper Junior College who won the juco national championship last season. He played high school ball at Elgin Larkin I believe. So, LaFalce will be the only experienced QB for the Leathernecks this fall backed up by Zach Wells, Ducey and Schultz. But, I remember a young freshman QB at Southern three years ago who beat Western and has had a pretty good career so far (Joel Sambursky). You never know until the practices start and you get them into game situations. Maybe Western can catch lightning in a bottle so to speak with one of them. But, they can only be as good as the offensive line in front of them as well. The key might be keeping Glasford healthy for a strong running game to take pressure off of the passing attack. Also, look for an announcement next week on the defensive coordinator position. I still say Parker Wildeman will become the new DC if he wants the opportunity.

I do not care who the QB is as long as it is not LaFalce. Fact is, the guy does not have div. 1 talent and would not even be starting at most lower level colleges. He may be a good athlete but he is no QB, I say throw him out at DB and use his speed. The kid from Miss. can't be all that bad, he is 6'6 and has to have a decent arm so why not try and groom him. We do not have the luxury of watching WIU groom a talented guy behind a good QB for a few years before starting him as we have at times in the past so i say give one of these guys who are actual QB's a chance for on the job training and send Steve-O to the defense. A good O-line is very important to the success of the skill players but when you have a QB who could not hit a semi-truck with a 5 yd pass no matter how much time he has, you have big problems my friend. And lets not forget, no passing game = no running game = trouble for WIU.

I think Parker would be a good choice has been part of the program for a while now. I think Coach Patterson would be wise to choose him for the DC job. As far as the QB's are concerned, I agree with wiuato--Bench LaFalce and give one of the other three a chance. If the QB position was better last year, WIU could have one at least 1 or 2 more games.

I think you guys are way off on your evaluations of LaFalce at QB. As far as his accuracy goes, 53%, 1767 yds and 12 TD's last year was respectable for a sophomore competing with a 5th yr senior for the position. He has what it takes to be a Div-1 QB. He has great poise in the pocket plus the ability to scramble. LaFalce will be fine this season. Besides, Patterson wouldn't put in one of the new recruits before they learn the system. Our O-line will be better this year and the running game will improve too. It's the defense that has to prove itself. They recruited a lot of defensive talent and that should help. I do agree with you on making Parker Wildeman the DC. He's earned it and the players will play hard for him. Just like they work their butts of for him in conditioning. That's another reason why the Necks will do better this year. The players are all at least 10-15 lbs heavier and in great shape. Plus having Lee Russell back as a grad-assistant is going to add a lot of passion on defense.

Hey, welcome Neckfan1! Looking at your statistics made me curious about Michna's accuracy. His last year (2003) he threw 3160 yards and was 211-371 which is about 57%! The Necks also outgained their opponents 2206 to 1765 on the ground. Could Lafalce's statistics or as some of us think, lack there of, have anything to do with the fact that the Necks were outgained on the ground last year 1648 to 3171??? No rushing yardage, no respect, being constantly chased, equals really tough passing situations. Heck, Glasford had only 11 touchdowns last year compared to 21 the year before. So......lets not count out Lafalce just yet. Lets see if with a better ground game, better defense, he can get the job done!!

From the 'just when I thought it was safe to go back in the water' department...I have found out that there is another name in the mix for DC. Apparently this guy is coming in next week for an interview with Coach P when he gets back from vacation. I won't say who it is just yet until I find out for sure how the interview goes. He is a current college DC from out east. Regardless, I still can't figure out why Parker doesn't get a chance UNLESS he has turned it down! Stay tuned!

Fan,
Man LaFalce is not accurate and the NECKS realistically could have pulled out a game or 2 more if he could hit a semi truck from even 2 yds. I saw first hand and yes he has some tools but the tools he does have are not what WIU needs at QB. WIU needs a passer period, he is not a passer and that is the answer to the stats in one of the previous posts refering to the running game being sub-par as a whole. Most of the teams know how big of a threat Glasford is and when you have a less than capable QB it makes his job real tough when defenses are packing in on him.

RBD,

Well I'll have to agree to disagree with you on QB LaFalce. Yes 53% completions isn't stellar, but it's still respectable for a sophomore who had to beat out a 5th year Senior from Duke to win the job. I saw all the games last year and yes he missed some recievers, but there were also a lot of good passes dropped, and he did connect on plenty of others (53%). So the proof will be in the pudding this season.
