Subject: Eastside improvement on the way! How about team?

Life Safety and Facilities Enhancement! Thats what president Goldfarb called yesterday when he was talking about installing fire sprinkling systems in all the dorms, building a new cultural center, and low and behold, rebuilding the student side of the football stadium. The bleachers that are there now were put in my freshman year (1971). Before that, there was hardly nothing at all. The seats are rickety at best and this will be just another improvement to our athletic facilities. Now, if we can just put a good football team on the field again, all will be right with the world.

I also scratch my head when our athletes do dumb things and are not called on the floor for it. A simple question should be asked each time a problem arises! "How bad do you really want to play?" But, Patterson seems to have a bit of a problem drawing the line in the sand. Remember the Campbells one cold Thanksgiving break? We know there have been others. Everyone makes mistakes! The question is can you learn from them and if your are truly confused, can someone help you learn from them? I would like to think that a winning programs mantra should be learn or leave!

Remember when WIU and Randy Ball were criticized so much for recruiting JC's and D1 transfer players. Now not only is everyone doing it, but it seems to be a must. Look at Delaware two years ago. There 3 of their studs were transfers, one if I am not mistaken, the qb was from Michigan. SIU fans use to hoot and holler but they are now happily quiet.

Just some thoughts! Respond or ignore as always.

Had a chance to look at the design for rehabbing Hanson Field. I was pretty impressed by what I saw. I guess the Board is/was to approve the first 5 million dollar phase which was to replace the east side bleachers and to also install a small concourse area on each end of those bleachers for concession stands, restrooms, etc. That is supposed to take place, as of now, after the 2006 season. Once that is done, phase 2 which includes new seating on the west side as well as a new press box facility which will run 1-2 stories high and the length of the west side stands, will be considered. Total cost for everything as it is now is 15 million. Anybody with some spare change to get rid of is invited to call Dr. Tim Van Alstine ASAP! Seriously, it's nice to see that improvements at WIU are still on the front burner. Although this is still years away and NOT on the drawing board yet, I know one considered scenario is to build a new basketball arena on the north end of Hanson Field (replacing the berm) that will include offices for the entire athletic department (coaches and all) and overlook the stadium. Western Hall would then be turned over to the Student Rec department for their own usage. We can all dream I guess.

I love construction!!! I continue to watch the work being done on the baseball stadium and now I have a spy in place who can take a real life view of anything going on in Macomb. Of course when I asked her how the baseball stadium was going her comments included, "sewer pipes, and really muddy." Contructions/rehab means vitality. Its like spring when trees get new growth to replace the old growth. 5 million to replace the east side bleachers will include some really nice concession facilities. I still have the plans which were at one time on the WIU website in my picture ablum. VanAlstine is really sharp folks!!!!! And so is Al Goldfarb. WIU is moving forward and will continue to move forward because it is really a great school. My daughter loves it. Rumor has it the gov released some funds today. If it includes the PAC well then, there is gonna be alot of cranes and mud, and construction on campus in the near future.

Can you believe it, I find myself looking more forward to the basketball season then the next football game. How things have changed.
