Subject: Bad, not bad, or not just good enough?

So from my vantage point, listening to the radio in my office in Wheaton, Illinois, WIU-Siu game seemed to be a pretty decent, competitive affair. 2 years ago Western was good enough to overcome its mistakes. Now it seems that we have to either play perfect ball, or we get beat at the end. An on sides with 5:12 to go with the defense playing well, seems a little drastic to me, especially with our offense scoring in a hurry. Limiting the Saluki's in scoring and offense is a real accomplishment for our improving defense, and Lafalce no longer appears to be the problem. What happen to our ground game. What happen to our all American running back, can't we run block? I talked with a player's dad last Friday night and he seemed to think that the Necks are continually improving and will be a contender next year. Maybe thats it. We slid down the hill last year with no up side. And now, we are battling our way back up the hill. Can 3 yards too far = 1 muffed punt be the difference in a game??? If so, then we are getting a lot closer then we were last week. I will get a personal look on Parent's weekend and also plan to see Randy Ball and State for the last home game. I know I am a bit too postitive, but things are improving, aren't they?

No, LaFalse is not the major problem right now but he does make some very dumb decisions that are not acceptable at this point. He has racked up alot of yds. the last 2 weeks due to safe play-calling (screen passes). But when he is looked upon to do more than that is all blows up!!! The run is hurting primarily because of no blocking but also the offensive scheme seems to be right now to pass and throw those screens and short passes and let the athletes like Gray, Glasford, Thomas etc. do their thing.

The question "are they good enough?" Well, to beat INST, ILST and maybe another YES. But to beat anyone else NO. Too many brain farts on a consistent basis by both the team and coaches, game management by the offense and especially the coaches is tremendously inexcusable at this point in the season.

We can still hold out hope for .500 record, it is possible.

I really hate to be this negative, but I think the Leathernecks will struggle to win another game this season. Last week's effort was promising, but still too many key mistakes and turnovers which this team can't seem to overcome. I thought we would be much better this season and maybe we are...We need to play a turnover-free game to find out how competitive we could be. I still don't think this team knows what it takes to win on the road which is why I can't see us winning at either Illinois State or Indiana State (ouch). QB is not the major concern, but LaFalce has contributed to the sack problem by being too slow on his reads and holding on to the ball too long. He must improve on that before next season. His yardage has been a little misleading considering that a lot of that was "racked up" after the catch by his receivers. Not a lot of downfield plays being called it seems OR maybe because LaFalce can't read it quick enough. I still do not like the delayed handoffs to Glasford from his spot seven yards behind the line of scrimmage. It's been too slow developing for the most part it seems and the defenses are stopping before it gets to the line. I would like to see the backfield line up closer to the line of scrimmage making it easier to run play action and/or option type plays on occasion. I think the future looks promising with some of the kids playing, but still some holes need to be filled next season with key I-A and juco transfers hopefully coming in.
