Subject: The Wagon Law

Tradition, program, continued success, are all things that of course take time, and take energy. The old law of entropy of organizations continues to take its toll no matter what one does. In other words, pushing the wagon up the hill to success in college football is one thing. Staying there is quite something different.

Bob, the reason I had no idea what the rule was as far as playing D1 schools is because, WIU has been a D1aa school for a long time and played D1 schools while I was in college back in the early 70's all the time. Juco players versus freshman, well Randy Ball saw it one way. He made a habit of recruiting D1 and juco transfers and people from SIU and the like use to give us considerable guff for all the transfers he brought in and still does. Patterson decided to go with more freshmen, with a sprinkling of D1 transfers and juco players. The Necks have been good for at least a decade before the slide we are now experiencing. Look at Delaware! Any school that has success goes through up and down periods. A good program means that the down times do not last too long and the good times last longer. We were good enough to win the 1aa championship the year that WKU won it, and should have had a good chance two years ago when the game was played in the Colgate snow.

Three years of success and growth for Coastal Carolina is a significant accomplishment. But, as time goes on you will have growing pains too. You will have some idiot go ballistic, or steal something, because we happen to be dealing with 18-22 year old kidadults. Its what you do when it happens that counts. A strong statement is being made finally! A win at ISU x 2 would be another example of corner turning.

I completely agree that 99.9% of schools go through rough times, and the better teams/programs come out of those rough times quicker, and have them less frequently. Are you sure you are talking about the Colgate game, or the game at Montana in the blizzard in the first round of the playoffs? I was at that game....thought it might be competitive. Waste of a 19 hour drive.

I understand why you were not aware of the D1 scholarship rule. I would not have been aware of it either if CCU had started football long before I went there.

Bob,
No, it was the Colgate game, WIU beat Montana on a late field goal. They should have beaten Colgate even in the horrific conditions, bad "homer" calls late really hurt the efforts in those conditions. But hey, that's football, to be a champion, you have to fight through adversity.

Maybe we are talking about different Montana games then. The Montana game I am talking about was in about 2003 or so, and my bad, you guys did win because I think they had the old Colorado/Colorado St QB Ochs. Wasn't is 43-40 in 2OT or something? That WAS a good game, but then it was the game after that one that was a waste. That next game was the Colgate game right?

28-27 right? QB went to pass on 3rd and inches and your TE caught it for an apparent tuddy but was pushed out of bounce or something??? Had like 8 ticks left when you went for FG but not enough time left for your FG kicker to get on the field.
