Subject: For once, I am really looking forward to WIU B-ball!

With the air almost totally out of the football bag, I have been turning my attention to hoops. This year you can order men's and women's press guides, and any other sport too!!! The "Necks" open up this Wednesday against St. Ambrose in an exhibition game. Seems like the Bees were fighting mad last year and took it to the Necks in the regular season. Definitely an embarrassment but also an indicator of how far we had fallen. From the sound of things it looks like the Necks are on their way up. I don't have my spy on campus yet, (daughter accepted to WIU but still a senior in high school) but still have a whole lost of questions.

1. Is the team moved into the new lockerroom facility yet?

2. Thomas is talking going 9 deep, how did they look in the scrimmage last week?

3. We definitely need to see some growth as we go from Iowa, to UCLA, to Indiana! I guess the indicator will be, how long are we in the ball game and how competitive are we the talent these three schools have.

4. The home stand must be a good one, especially against Utah Valley (new D1 school) and Evansville and Loyola.

5. They had trouble printing season tickets! I wonder if that was because of an increase or just a plain computer glitch! Increase attendance will definitely indicate an improved product.

6. I went to ScoutHoops.com today and looked for WIU recruits. Once again, names came up, something that never ever happened with Kerwin.

As far as football is concerned, it is really too bad that we did not get to Chatanooga last year or the year before. We really were stacked with talent just like SIU is this year. Unfortunately we failed to get the most out of it for one reason or another.

Read some of the comments from the baseball coach. With his new facility ready to start construction, his staff improvements, and recruiting, he really is talking "big time" baseball. Once again, the scedule will include a whole lot of big time baseball programs.

Western Illinois athletics is definitely moving in the right direction! Can you say "Gonzaga!"

Just saw a blurb that Western will be playing Kansas and Arkansas in addition to Indiana in 2005-06.

I'm also eagerly anticipating the start of the basketball season (since the football season will end uncharacteristically soon). Anyone think Coach Thomas will be Coach of the Year? Anything will be an improvement over 3-25. I'll be happy over .500, then three days in March!

How about last nights game with SIUE. Seems rather close. SIUE is a fairly good D-2 program.Maybe Western experimented with players etc. I know these types of games and scores can be deceiving. Anyone at the game, or heard anything?

Just saw a blurb that Western was down 17 at half. Got outrebounded 40-26.

I was at the game. Rebounding was awful. We had no one to stay with their 6-11 guy. I hope they learned that defensive pressure is the key to fast breaks. When we turned up the heat in the last 7 min. we were able to get out and run which they did very well. SIUE is a very good D-II team with alot of upperclassmen but we still should be able to do alot better than a late win. Until we get alot tougher in the post defensively we better not get bogged down in a half court game. Cepeda should be returning soon so maybe he can help. This team needs to run as much as possible and take better shots. By that I mean the shot selction was very poor at times especially with Oguns. He is a real strong player around the hoop but doesn't seem to want to stay there. All in all a good win and a learning experience for the newcomers. This team is a vast improvement over last year and the crowd really got into it the last 7 min.
