Subject: North Carolina, North Carolina, North Carolina

In the old days, before the three point shot and the shot clock, but after the jump after every made basket, teams with 16 point leads with 5 minutes to go use to yell, "North Carolina!" What this play called for was basically a four corners offense, ball control, make them foul you, get a layup or don't shoot! Sometimes it worked, and sometimes it would backfire and the stall would merely stall the team in the lead. No matter, if your smart, how many total possessions are there with 5 minutes to go, that is you take time off the clock and then run a play to score. Can one team outscore the other team 23 - 7 in 5 minutes.......yes we know that it is possible. Not really likely, unless you have been on the road for awhile and the team is full of young inexperienced kids! Of course with good old Will Lewis at the freethrow line, 2 shots Will, 2 shots, your a senior, a leader according to the Western Courier, 2 shots, make them both and its a wonderful plane ride home, of course after the bus ride from Utah to Las Vegas. Make one, and they have got to shoot it from beyond the arc Will, just make one.......Coach Thomas must have felt like he was chasing the broken end of a kite string last night, the white line just out of reach each time he dove to grab it. During my 22 years of coaching basketball, I realized that if you could just win most of the close ones, if you could just grab that string, you'd end up having a pretty darn good season. If you couldn't, you had to hope that you had a young and resilient team that could learn the tough lessons for the future. And that my good "Leatherneck faithful" is where we are tonight.
