Subject: SMS and name change

With several family members and friends in Springfield,MO- and, knowing a lot of SMS alums, it looks like these "poor souls" are about to get what they have been wanting for YEARS. The Mo legislature appears to be close to granting them a new name- Missouri State University. These folks have been obsessed with this change for years. They believe it gives them more respect as a school. Mizzou has blocked this many times, seems they can't stand the thought of someone "infinging" on their territory. No doubt SMS has earned the title- statewide attendance, size, and a fine campus .
Northeast became Truman when the state legislature designated it as the official liberal arts school for the state of Missouri.

I hope this puts to rest the sleepless nights some of these SMS folks have had.Just kidding! I guess the name change can help in the perception some folks might have about state schools and name importance.

What does that do to Southeast Missouri State(SEMO)?

If SMS deserves a name change then doesn't SEMO?

Yes, one would think so. The folks in Springfield have for several years considered SMS to be on par with Mizzou. They base this on enrollment-20,000 or more, and, the success of the men's and women's BB teams- and the exposure brought in. The Hammonds family give a LOAD of money to SMS- very new looking campus etc. The students, alums all have a very strong liking to the school.

Apparently the MO legislature is on a roll. Missouri Southern can drop Joplin from it's name, and Harris Stowe will become university status. Central Missouri State has the option to become University of Central Missouri.According to most recent articles. Southeast has not asked for any name change- they recently dropped Indians for Redhawks. Northwest Missouri has no requests to change it's name either.Rumor has had them joining the Uof Missouri system- they deny any interest.

I remember a few years ago name changes were common.

SMS has agreed not to duplicate any of Mizzou's programs etc-- could hurt somewhat for future growth and desires.

We have followed MU- mostly football- since 1975. The antlers used to be somewhat funny, over the past several years they have gotten out of hand. A lot like the athletic department at Mizzou. Noone can figure out how Quin stays on- a lot of turmoil there, even in the football program.
