Southland Conference cuts UTPA out of expansion plans

EDINBURG — The University of Texas-Pan American didn’t make the final cut with the Southland Conference.

The Southland Conference’s 10 presidents met Friday in Galveston to discuss the possibility of expansion and elected to give Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Central Arkansas on-campus visits, SLC Director of Media Relations Kristie Le confirmed Monday. UTPA, Centenary and Tarleton State — the other three schools that made 45-minute presentations to the Southland Conference Board of Directors during a May 21 meeting in Houston — were not awarded on-campus visits. . . .

The Southland Conference announced its intentions to "explore the possibility of expansion" this past January. UTPA, along with the four other schools, then had a chance to make its sales pitch to the league during last month’s meeting in Houston.

It was the first time UTPA has had a chance to make a presentation to the conference since being booted from the Sun Belt Conference in July 1998 after being plagued by NCAA violations throughout the late 1980s and into the mid-90s.

Geographically, the Southland Conference is the best fit for UTPA. The athletic programs at UTPA currently compete against Texas-San Antonio, Texas-Arlington, Lamar, Texas State and Sam Houston State, all members of the Southland Conference.

Other options for conference affiliation for UTPA include the Mid-Continent Conference (there are no current openings) and the possible formation of an Independent conference.

The Mid-Continent, which has expressed interest in UTPA in the past, would saddle the Broncs with costly travel, while the Independent conference is still in the brainstorming stages. . . .
