Western Illinois receives $10,000 donation toward baseball stadium project
In honor of Western Illinois' 1944 team, Jack and Margaret Stites have donated $10,000 toward Western’s new baseball stadium, a project that is a part of the Target: Western Forward facilities campaign.
Western’s 1944 Illinois Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) Championship baseball team may seem a part of Western’s past, but it was just the beginning of a long and rich tradition of Leatherneck baseball that is being carried on today with the Western Illinois Baseball Stadium Project.
Stites, an infielder on a squad that swept a doubleheader from Northern Illinois to win the title with just nine players, wanted to remember his teammates with the donation.
“When the stadium project came about, Margaret and I talked it over and we decided that we wanted to help and honor the team of 1944,” said Stites. “We are thrilled that we have the ability to contribute to such a wonderful program.”
“The championship team of ‘44 is an important part of the Western baseball tradition,” said Western Illinois head baseball coach Stan Hyman. “This gift from Jack and Margaret is especially meaningful to the program. Their generosity toward the stadium project is greatly appreciated and hopefully the 2004 team can deliver another championship.”
“This gift is a reflection of the commitment and loyalty our alums have for Western Illinois University and the baseball program,” said Western Illinois Director of Athletics Dr. Tim Van Alstine. “Jack truly believes that more baseball championships are on the horizon, and his financial investment in our new stadium will certainly help make that happen.”
Western’s 2004 season will mark the 60th anniversary of the IIAC Championship team.
“We hope to honor the five remaining teammates of the 1944 squad prior to a game next spring,” added Hyman. “It will be a very special event.”
For information on contributing the Western Illinois Baseball Stadium Project, interested parties may contact Coach Hyman at (309) 298-1521 or Dr. Van Alstine at (309) 298-1190.
