Subject: Your basketball team ...

... might be the worst Mid-Con team I've ever seen in my 15+ years. Maybe Kerwin wasn't so bad after all.

No way. Kerwin would take losing in stride. The new coach does not, and when his new recruits come in next year (his first recruiting class at Western), I think WIU will be in better shape.

It is also worthy of mention that they played their first half against us without JD Summers who was suspended. When he came in for the 2nd half, they played us even. I wouldn't get too used to WIU being some kind of doormat.

Coach Thomas is doing MUCH better than Kerwin. Yes, WIU started off poorly, but look at who they played. Coach Thomas will have WIU to heights they've never been to in a few years.

Yes, I am. Way to go, Coach Thomas and Co on a great game against S. Utah. If WIU can continue to play well, they could be hard to beat. Bring on Chicago St. GO 'NECKS!!

Someone has been watching recruiting lists. Western has an outstanding group coming in next year. 3 high school kids an 1 juco. I belive 3 are 6-8 and taller. The kid from Memphis had 38 last week and he's about 6-6 and a guard!!! The Kid from Moline is really developing into a great shot blocker and a defensive force. He's about 6-10. So look out, Western will be coming in the next few years.

In reference to WIU's team, the group with the exception of 2 guys(cole & gray) are Kerwin recruits. After this season I believe 3-4 are graduating. After the 2005 season this will be primarily Derek Thomas' guys and from what I understand, he is got people who really want to play for him.

As for the recruits for next season, yes he has some good one's but the kid from Moline sucks and is not a good option for this team. I do not know him but I have seen him play and he is not a solution in the post for WIU, he may have had played well in camps this summer but those camps are far different than playing in a D-1 system. WIU needs a big guy who can score and rebound, blocks are nice but WIU has had that in the past and it did not make any difference under the basket. They need an inside threat to get the ball to from the speedy guards. I am disappointed in the transfers this season, Lenoir is fair and Archie is inconsistent at best. And what happened to Wil Lewis? this guy I thought would be a force, he has played well but not nearly to what I thought he would. Next season with some new guys to blend in with Doyle Cole and TJ Gray this team could be on the rise.

Just look at IUPUI, 2 yrs ago, nobody thought they would be anything and look at them now. nd Chicago St. Man, the Mid-Con must be really down for them to be tied for 1st.

If you've seen the lasek kid from moline play for his high school team, then I would understand your comments. Moline runs a guard oriented team and does not get the ball inside. They live and die by the 3 pointer. His AAU team during the summer plays more of a college style game and he average around 15 a game. Can we say Late Bloomer?

WIU cannot afford to recruit anymore hopefulls. That is what Kerwin did and most did not pan out or transfered to smaller schools. The kid from Moline is a project at best. I have seen him play atleast 5 times and i do not care what style of offense Moline plays he is not a D-1 caliber player skill wise, mentally maybe. And besides, what style of offense do you think WIU runs? Western in my 17 yrs following them has never had an inside game. They have at times had some evry skilled forwards who could offensively play inside but as for a legit crop of big men i have not seen it. I think in Derek Thomas' effort to make an immediate impression on the WIU community he in my opinion(and it is just one) rushed in his committment to Lasek, I think he could have used this spot to look in another area and then maybe re-visit Lasek later.

Not knocking the kid personally, just that he is not a good fit for WIU.

Lasek ended up Honorable mention all-state in the IBCA poll. Because of his defense, rebounding and shot blocking and "shot altering" abilities he lead Moline down the state finals. I'm sorry to disagree but I think he will be a great fit for us since our defense on the interior was so weak last season. Just an opinion and a hope that we won't have to endure another season like last year.

Here is the link:

Sounds like 2 more GREAT recruits for Coach Thomas. WIU should vastly improve from last year.
