"6-9 center Kyle Lasek of Moline has given a verbal commitment to the Western Illinois Leathernecks. Lasek, who is long-armed and mobile, showed a tremendous amount of improvement in his skills while playing this summer on the AAU circuit with the RBS All Stars. Western Illinois is also showing interest in 6-4 swingman Kenny Gordon of Rich South"

Leathernecks Land Big Man

The Western Illinois Leathernecks wasted little time in securing a commitment from Kyle Lasek. The 6-9 big man played in the AAU Nationals with the RBS All-Stars last week.

Derek Thomas and the Western Illinois Leathernecks landed their first commitment from the Class of 2004. Kyle Lasek, a 6-9, 210 pound power forward from Moline (IL) High picked the Leathernecks.

After receiving interest in last few months from Marquette, Iowa, Indiana State, Drake, Northern Iowa and Southern Illinois, Lasek attended a Western summer camp and was sold.

“I went down for a camp and got to see Coach Thomas working with me personally,” Lasek said. “Two days removed from the camp I came back to Moline playing with my high school guys and I noticed a lot of improvement.”

Lasek is one of those late blooming prospects. He averaged just 6 points and 5 boards as a junior in about half of Moline’s games. However, he’s made enough strides in his game to go with his size that colleges started becoming interested.

Western Illinois had been on him for the past two months and Thomas and assistant Jeff Guinn scouted him last week in Orlando with the RBS All-Stars. The big man was impressed with Thomas’ abilities.

“He’s a very up front guy,” Lasek said. “He’s friendly, he tells you like it is and you don’t have to worry about him [not being honest with] you. He says this is what my program is and this is where you can help us.”
