Groundbreaking for new Western Illinois baseball facility set for August 25

8/23/2003

Groundbreaking for the Western Illinois baseball stadium project will begin Monday, August 25, with the construction of the Leathernecks’ new batting facility that will sit down the third base side of Vince Grady Field.

The 60x80 foot structure will house three 70-foot batting tunnels equipped with Major League Astro Turf as well as an in-ground dirt mound in one tunnel, and two portable professional mounds in the other two tunnels.

Western’s old batting cage will be removed beginning at 8:00 a.m. Monday morning and concrete for the new facility is expected to be poured Tuesday morning.

After the completion of the batting facility, the destruction of the old dugouts and the construction of Western’s new two 60-foot long above-ground dugouts will follow.
