It was the second time in his career that Watson, who was 12-of-23 from the floor and 7-of-13 from behind the 3-point line, had 40 or more points. His career high is 54 against ORU.

Although weary, Valparaiso also was wary, and that was enough Saturday for the Crusaders to hold off upset-minded Chicago State.

"We were exhausted," Valparaiso coach Homer Drew said. "We had to dig deep for a gut check."

Drew was referring to a time in the 79-68 victory at Chicago State when the game between his Mid-Continent Conference perennially powerful Crusaders and the upstart Cougars seemed to hang in the balance.

The score was tied 49-49 with 10 minutes to play. Chicago State, losers of 31 straight league games until this season, seemed to have the momentum to improve its league record to 6-4. Valpo was feeling the effect of flights and delays that resulted in a 12-hour return trip from Thursday night's game against Centenary in Louisiana.

The Crusaders pulled straight A's in their gut-check tests. In the seven minutes after the tie, they outscored the Cougars 23-8 to take an imposing 72-57 lead.

Furthermore, Valpo did things you don't expect from a weary team. It sank free throws and played tough, tenacious defense, holding the Cougars without a field goal for most of the seven-minute stretch.

Where did Valpo find the extra energy?

"Coach told us the game would be really close," said sophomore Dan Oppland, who scored nine of his game-high 23 points during the decisive drive. "We knew if we are going to contend for the conference championship or win the conference tournament, we'd have to be tough. We couldn't have any excuses.

"So, we got tough mentally. We made free throws (25 of 35) and played tough defense."

The victory was Valpo's seventh in its last eight games and improved the Crusaders' record to 11-10, 8-4 in the Mid-Con. Chicago State's loss was its third in its last nine games and it dropped to 7-17 and 5-5.

The two rivals played a furious game that drew 50 personal fouls, 26 on the Cougars, and a technical foul on coach Kevin Jones. Five players fouled out, including three Cougars.

"When we went through that stretch without making a basket, it was because we got out of our offense," Jones said. "The players kept saying, `We want to run more.' We can't do that yet. We don't have the great players it takes to do that.
