Les....you have no idea who I am, nor do you know the many many fans out there...I have to tell you...I was heartbroken to see the rehab video. I had no idea of the struggles you've had...i want you to know that you were such a huge part of my life, and the lives of my friends. We would play your music...dance around, and pretend we knew you all. You were always my favorite, and I use to pretend that we were married! I want you to know that you are a part of me...truly you always have been and always will be...know that your life has impacted my in a major way...and I carry those memories with me always...you made my life so special...be well and know that you are loved so much by your devoted fans...hugs and kisses...I'm so choked up sending you this message.....I'm grateful for YOU....lots of love to you....Nancy Churchill

Subject: Mallory Park Roller Fans Needed for UK TV Show - Help?

(77-97-132-179.cable.ubr18.brad.blueyonder.co.uk/77.97.132.179)

Calling for help from all of my fantastic Roller Friends.

Need help for UK TV Show. . . .

I have been speaking today with some people who are wanting to put together a programme for the BBC which would be featured on the BBC One Show.

It would be part of a series hoping to be called ¡§I Was There!¡¨

They want to make one of these shows about our lads and their very loyal army of fans.

We are looking for people to help out with the creation of this programme, the subject is the Radio One Fun Day at Mallory Park on May 18th 1975 where BCR played on the island in the lake and the fans invaded the lake to try and get to the lads.

Were you there? Do you know someone who was? Do you have a story to tell about that day? Did you make it through the lake to get to the lads themselves?

If so, please get in touch, we need your help to make this programme happen.
If you would like to get to tell your story on the BBC, please let us know about it.

There is a limited time to get all of this together so if you can get in touch or pass this message to anyone and everyone you know who may have been around at that time and may have been there, please do so as soon as you can, it would be very much appreciated.

Let¡¦s do what we can to get something positive about our lads out there and show the world that Rollermania is still alive and well and kicking in 2009.

If you have any questions or would like to send your story in, please either get in touch with me at:

andrea@cannonandball.com

or with the guy directly responsible for getting this show together:

Cris Warren at:

cris.w@iconfilms.co.uk

Thank you soooo much, I know I can count on you guys to help get this done for the lads! ļ x x x x x

PS.

If we don¡¦t find enough people from the Mallory Park gig, we may be interested in hearing from anyone who¡¦s first ever concert experience was a BCR Gig. I am sure there are a ton of you guys out there who fit into that category, lol.

Thanks again,

Andrea x

Two Little Boys by Rolf Harris (holds head in shame at such an admission!!)... the disco was at Parr Hall in Warrington!! So, when I learned that Lesmac & the Legendary guys are gonna be gigging at that very venue next month..... guess where I'll be on Wednesday 14 October????? Bring it on!

I am one truely shocked Aussie fan.
I didn't think the word quit was part of Les's vocabulary.

I have to agree with Patty though. So far she is the only person who has said what she truely feels and not what everyone else out there wants to hear. She says that, to her, that it is NOT OK for Les to quit.........to that, I say, good on you Patty.
Patty, I too, hope that Les reconsiders and changes his mind.
You ARE RIGHT..........MUSIC IS LESLIE RICHARD McKEOWN's HEART AND SOUL......HIS LIFE !!!!!!!!!!!
How is he possibly going to live without it.

Les, you were born to sing , to entertain-----not to sit back and watch the world go by !!!!!!!
Yes, you have given us, your fans, so much happiness over the years, but we, your fans, have also given you that same happiness.

2010 is still a long way off and hopefully the response from your fans will convince you to change your mind and continue to do what you obviously love so much. I say obviously, because if you didn't, you would have quit a long time ago !!!!!!!!!!!

Individual people do not have the power to change anything, but if we all band together and unite on this front, we, as Roller fans might have the power to change HIS mind !!!!!!!!!!!

Come on ladies, I know we have the power to do this.
DO YOU HONESTLY WANT A WORLD WITHOUT LES McKEOWN ?????
A WORLD WHERE YOU WILL NO LONGER HEAR HIM SING LIVE ????
I, for one, DON'T........and if you are all honest, you don't either.

LET'S TRY OUR BLOODY HARDEST TO CHANGE HIS MIND..........BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Don't think Lori (love you) made it quite clear this is the last time, the only time I will perform again 2010, in a fest situation this is my retirement year, I tried to work out how much love I have, and I have a lot, that love will last for an eternity..long after I am gone....thank you :-), I was thinking it will be time to put my wee tartan boots away and chill-out and live a decent decadent life....what do you think?

Hi Les! I watched the Bay City Rollers when I was a young girl of 12. I even went to your concert when you were at the Iowa State Fair and thought you were great. Les I was real touched when I watched your Rehab video. I really thank God that you went for help for you alcohol addiction. I have a father who had a drinking problem after my mother died. I almost lost him and I wasn't ready for that yet. My prayers are out for you because you are a sweet guy. I just want you to know that God loves you and He is your healer for your problems. I rarely post on here but I feel truly pissed off at some of the reactions to Les' news. Give the guy a break. How dare anyone even use the word quit in the same sentence as this man. He has given enough of his life to you the fans now it is time for nim and his family. Don't lay this guilt trip at his feet. Do you even know the man? Because I can tell you he is no quitter. It really upsets me that people can be so bloody selfish. Everyone has the right to retire, I didn't hear him mention he was quitting.

I am shocked at the hatred towards one of the fans.I know Lorna and know that she was only saying what she feels.Let me take you way back to 1978 when Les wanted to leave the BCR(All be it under different circumstances.) A lot of fans decided they no longer wanted to follow the band after Les left. How is that being a Bay City Rollers Fan.I for one have followed the band when Duncan joined and then in 85 when Les rejoined.Lorna is not a selfish person but a passionate fan who loves Les just as much as you all.Of course no one person or group can change Les' mind.I wish him all in everything he does.Unlike you American fans who have seen Les almost every year for the last 5 or so years.i may be wrong in that but the Fests come almost yearly in the States..I have not seen Les in over 10 years and the time i saw him in Glasgow was a dream come true as he was the 1st Roller i have met.So Les enjoy retirement. If you ever decide to venture to New Zealand you have a place here to stay.Thank you for all the wonderful music.
Ok you can all have a go at me now.I would love to see Les perform one more time but i know that is not going to happen .The music will never die because we as fans will keep it alive with fan fests and chat.

As the person who along with Lori and Denise started this board MANY years ago, I could not Les's announcement pass without saying something

To Les THANK YOU, THANK YOU and THANK YOU, for helping a generation of young girls get through the rough years through your music and just being you. You truly will never know the real impact you have had on all of our lives but it is so appreciated... Thank you again for helping us as grown woman as we faced adulthood, marriage, children, jobs etc, we "refound" you through the internet and we refound each other. Through this adult bond (as a direct result of YOU) we were able to remember what it was to be 13 or 14 again and it helped as we struggled through the identity thing that happens to so many woman in their 30's. We laughed, cried, sang, danced, traveled, talked for hours. loved and drank ALOT as we celebrated friendships formed by the Bay City Rollers. Thank you for so much love and fun you brought to us. Thank you for being exactly who I envisioned you to be at 12 yrs old. Thank for you the laughs on PAL and the chats that lasted hours. Thank you for "killing the blues" & "Saturday night" but most importantly...THANK YOU for making our lives so much richer because you were a part of it.

Now it's time for you to take the love we have for you. the love that Peko and Jube have for you and go on and live the next chapter of your life. While it may make us sad that you will not perform again...we KNOW that what you need now is to live YOUR life...a happy one...much LOVE to you my friend. I will indeed see you in Savannah in a years time...I hope you take the love that fills that room the night of the FEST with you into retirement--- because it is honest and true and so very VERY real.

He has given us so many years of joy...it is his turn to as Lori says enjoy life. He gives 125% to his fans...HE ALWAYS HAS...he is kind, caring, funny, considerate dare I go on...he is just an incredible guy who could have said F@#$ it years ago...and not give a crap about his fans...BUT HE DOES..and I for one was thinking today how great it was that he gave us this much notice...so we can perhaps GET TO SAVANNAH..or anywhere else he is playing..better this then oh by the by guys that was my last gig....I have supported this man since I was 10...and over the last 7 years have been fortunate to be able to travel to see him....see him perform, spend time with him...and I STAND BEHIND HIM...in this decision..do I wish it wasn't a reality...hell ya...but the reality is, he wants to do this. Isn't it time for his family who has given up so much to actually get to have a father back, a husband..so I will support him like I always have, and frankly always will.
IF he decides later on, that he misses performing and wants to come back..you bet your sweet a#@ that I will be there for him, but if this is it, really and truly it and at the end of 2010, Les McKeown has sung his last song, then as sad as I know I will be...I am HAPPY for him, and I know in my heart that I have been fortunate to have had him in my life all these years!!

Rollers to sue for royalties
PATON'S DEATH COULD LEAD TO £50M WINDFALL

By Siobhan McFadyen, 11/04/2009
THE Bay City Rollers could be in line for a £50million windfall following the death of ex-manager Tam Paton.

A top US court has given the pop legends the green light to sue their old record company for unpaid royalties.

The band's Boston-based lawyer Josh Krumholz said: "This ruling is a highly significant victory."

And last night former Rollers singer Les McKeown said: "This tops off an absolutely brilliant week. I know we are not meant to celebrate someone's death - but I have been.

"Now Paton is out of our lives it will clear the way for us to get our cash. We earned every penny of it."

Paton died of a heart attack in his Edinburgh home on Wednesday, aged 70. He left an estimated £5m. But he'd denied pocketing the band's royalties, claiming that he "signed a dodgy record deal".

Now a judge in New York has agreed the Rollers can sue Arista Records for cash they insist they're still due from the sales of millions of records plus merchandising, downloads and ringtones.

The group's contract promised they'd receive royalty cheques twice a year. But they have only had a single payment of £133,000 in 1997. Estimates suggest the band could be owed more than £50m.

A Rollers source said: "Arista have made excuse after excuse for not paying up. One of their claims was that they didn't know who to send the cheques to.

"But now Paton's gone, the way is clear to find out where the money really is."

If we get the Arista money there will be no stopping us

The Rollers cleared a major legal hurdle when they were granted permission to pursue their case in New York's Southern District Court. Legal eagle Josh added: "We now look forward to recovering in full the millions in royalties the Bay City Rollers have earned, plus the interest due for the many years that their money has been wrongfully withheld."

No one was available for comment at Arista Records, who are based in the Big Apple and now owned by music giants Sony BMG.

But Rollers frontman McKeown, 53, couldn't hide his delight - and claimed the news could even lead to the band RE-FORMING.

The dad-of-two - who claims Paton raped him when he was a teenager - recently spent two months in the Passages rehab facility in Malibu, California, which has also hosted Britney Spears.

He said: "If we get the Arista money there will be no stopping us. I am going up to Scotland next month to talk to the rest of the band about reforming. We hope we can get back on the road."

What do you think? Leave your comments below

But Les isn't sorry Paton - cleared of raping ex- Roller Pat McGlynn in 1977 - won't be there to see them. He said: "Tam was a rapist beast. He ruined a lot of lives. I was only 18 or 19 when he raped me - a young boy.

"Now he's gone, me and the rest of the band are trying to piece together our lives again."

And as for the prospect of getting millions from Arista, a smiling Les added: "Perhaps it was a blessing they held on to it - I might have p****d it up a wall.

"But I'm clean and sober now. I don't yearn for a drink any more."

Good morning BCR fans.

I'm posting this message in the hope that somebody can offer me a piece of advice on some memorabilia that I've picked up.

Basically, I'm a local newspaper reporter from Fife, Scotland and yesterday a reader came into our office.

He had picked up a ring bound folder at a car boot sale which is full of rollers receipts from early gig booking, correspendence with Paton regarding gig bookings/fan club pictures etc and also letters from record label people.

The guy who picked this folder up is interested in its value and I'd like to do a little story on him picking up this piece of rollers 'treasure' if that is in fact what it is.

Can anybody advise me if there's an official band fan club anywhere where I can speak with somebody regarding this man's find?

My e-mail address is posted.

Thanks very much people - all the very best.

Hi everyone. I‘d like to tell you about a charity event I’m helping I to organise. It’s in aid of ‘everyman – funding research to cross out male cancer’ and is being held at the Bayee Village restaurant in Wimbledon, south London on the evening of Thursday 23rd April 2009.
There will be live karaoke with the fabulous TwoThreeFour! Allstars Band (featuring a particularly talented and some might even say handsome bass player/bandleader) where anyone can get up and have a go at singing with the band – we have already been promised some very interesting celebrity crooners having a go! Who knows who might turn up??
Tickets cost £50.00 for which you also get a Champagne reception and free wine and Chinese buffet.
And the whole thing is being covered by OK! Magazine.
Fir tickets please call Julie-Lyn on 07802 333839 (that’s a UK mobile phone number). Hope to see you there!

Im not sure if Les reads any of these, and what I am about to post may not be very popular to the fans so I will leave it in the capable hands of the moderator as to whether this should be posted or not. Here goes

Les; I watched your courageous and candid journey and I want to commend you and apologize to you. I have, for many years thought you were nothing less then a complete Prat! I was wrong, I was very wrong. I want to wish you the best and give you some advice, leave the Bay City Rollers behind, you owe us nothing, you have given us so much. We are not your friends, we are your fans, we do not know Les McKeown the man, the father, the husband, the hurt boy. We only know Les McKeown the performer. You have given enough to us. Concentrate on you, your wife, your beautiful son. Continue to heal and always know that you have given enough and your fans will always love you. Bless you and your family. I wish you all the best for a wonderful future.

Les

Watched Rehab and i think like everybody who watched it
have nothing but admiration for you to facing up to your
demons.
When you confessed to what happened in your past
you could clearly see the difference, when you where being interviewed, almost the same guy with that great sense of
humour,we seen thirty years ago.
I think by listening to what had happened to you
enforces the poit of what an evil man T.P. was
and i think he probably created that anamosity ,and distrust, which caused the problems in the rollers
but f--- him he no longer should be thought of
Good luck mate and stay of the booze, because the
B----- who tried to destroy your life as well
as the booze would only end up winning.
And like me (dont want to sound like a bible basher)
believe that some day you will see your mum and dad again
Until then enjoy your life with your lovely wife and son
And keep on playing that music that touched so many peoples lives

I am not a BCR "fan", as such, but I met Les a few times during the Once in a Lifetime tour in 2005. Last night I watched the documentary on Living and I just wanted to say how much I admire Les for tackling his addiction problems and speaking so openly & honestly about his past. And, I have to say, you look great - SO much better & healthier than when you used to drink. I wish you all the best and really hope that you find the strength to stay off the booze. Les, you rock! Have just finished watching the rehab programme and just had to say how proud you should feel Les at what you have done and shared. This must of been incredible hard for you and to share such personal thngs with so many is amazing. I really believe that once again you will have touched people out there and once again help them with their own demons. Nobody has the right to judge you in any way and if you do get negative feedback then those people are just not worth being around and don't love you. I thought I would go on a small journey with you and gave up smoking in November very tough but hey! if you can do it I can!
Personally you touched my heart and I could related to some of your pain. Thanks so much for sharing and inspiring. I pray for you MOST days that life will get better by the day. God Bless you Les!

Hi Les -

we watched the Rehab programme tonight and for once we thought it centred on someone who really wanted to get to the heart of the problem. We were very impressed by your openness and allowing yourself to be vulnerable - that takes someone very strong deep down. Want to wish you & your family well - who we thought were fantastic.

What you spoke about does not diminish you in any way and the fact you spoke openly and honestly is to your great credit

good for you mate - keep on rockin'

Best wishes

Former Bay City Rollers front man, Les McKeown, is ready finally to leave the past behind

Published Date: 15 February 2009
By Catherine Deveney
Feature Writer of the Year
THE first time I interviewed Les McKeown there were a lot of double bourbons consumed (his) and a lot of tears shed (mainly his too, though he'd have brought tears to a glass eye that day).
All the cuttings about the former lead singer with the Bay City Rollers suggested he was cocky and cheeky and a bit sexist, and I suppose he was all of those. But what you think of someone depends on what time of their life you meet them, really. At that point, he was an alcoholic and he wasn't in control: he was simply stripped naked by his vulnerabilities. Come to think of it, McKeown would probably make a dirty joke at that phrase, but all that stuff is a bit of a front for a man who gets very stressed and is simultaneously chippy and sensitive. He had lost both his parents the year before we met, and it had triggered a kind of mourning that felt simply infinite to him. He was in bits: talking and crying and laughing, and crying some more.

Five years later, he responds within ten minutes to an e-mail, and we talk on the phone. I've read that he has given up drink. It's true, he says. We agree to meet at his local Italian restaurant but come the day a few cryptic calls lead – eventually – to scanning the crowds for him at Canary Wharf shopping centre (I think he always has some scheme on the go.) He looks physically better than the last time I saw him, though perhaps a bit pale still. Before he went into rehab, his doctor had told him he shouldn't expect to live beyond six months. Not that he listened to her. "I didn't really care. I thought, 'So what. The world's shit, I'm shit, you're shit, f*** off. F***, f***, f***…'"

I remember that anger mixed in with the tears, the bit of him that wanted to tell the rest of the world to love him unconditionally or get lost. The bit that loved and loathed himself all at once. He was in denial when told he was killing himself. "The day she told me, I reckon I got more drunk than I'd ever got. Just to somehow prove her wrong… Or prove her right… Whatever. I thought, 'What do you know? I'll drink half a bottle less and last longer than six months.'" At that point, he drank a bottle and a half a day of Wild Turkey, a superstrong bourbon. He almost lived in the pub, seeing his Japanese wife Peko and son Jubei only when he came home to sleep off the alcohol between sessions. It was complete self-destruction.

Six months after that first meeting, he agreed to another interview, television this time. I wondered if the intensity of his grief about his parents would have abated. Clearly, the grief was genuine; McKeown adored his mum and dad. But it was also abundantly clear that bereavement had become a dumping ground into which he had thrown every other grief and disappointment of his life too. The bitter jealousies of his relationship with the other members of the Rollers, particularly Eric Faulkner. His hatred and fear of their manager, Tam Paton. His fury at the "missing millions" that he claimed Arista Records owed the band. The death of his parents became the focus for everything bad in his life.

Within minutes of the camera rolling, he was again on the verge of tears. It had the potential for car-crash TV, and yet there was an emotional honesty, a kind of desperate bravery, that made it poignant. "I just want to be a better person," he said. And he meant it. At the end, he hugged me in the middle of the set while the cameramen wrapped up uneasily. I think we all wished we could pull him from the wreckage his life had obviously become, but it was like viewing him from behind glass. Nobody could reach him; he was going to have to walk clear for himself.

WE FIND THE quietest spot in Canary Wharf, which means an unimposing sandwich bar. McKeown doesn't mind; he has no demands. He is very well mannered that way. The honesty is still there too. It's startling to listen to someone saying searingly awful things about themselves and continuing to eat a sandwich. Then you realise that he has already done his crying, his denial, in rehab; what he is saying now is what he has been forced to come to terms with. "I have been a complete shit. A bad husband, a bad father. I was in complete denial about that, the damage I have done to my own family… My wife, she has been unhappy for years. My son has had an absent alcoholic, you could say abusive, father. Abusive in the way of neglect. I've had no time for him. 'Oh, f*** off, I'm too busy… Ask your mum… Piss off… I'm away for a drink.' That kind of thing is abuse. You're not being a father; you're being a complete twat. So I had to face up to that, and it was f***ing hard to face up to it. But that was then, and this is now."

He went to Passages, a rehab centre in Malibu, California, the result of a request from a television company that wanted to follow celebrities through their various addictions. McKeown knew how expensive Passages was, and what a rare chance it offered him to change his life. He has no memory of the first few days. His body responded badly to alcohol-withdrawal and he needed medication to help him adjust.

During the subsequent therapy, Peko and Jubei were asked to fly out to visit. Jubei had his own issues with addiction, and was asked to stay. "You're sitting there and the guy says, 'Okay Jubei, what would you like to say to your father?' And that's when you find out," McKeown says sombrely. What did he say? "That for all the years he just wanted my love… That he wanted me to be a proper father… He didn't want to see me killing myself. It all came out. My wife said similar things, and I suddenly realised, 'I don't want to be here. I need a drink now because I don't want to think about how shitty I have been.' You con yourself into thinking, 'I'm all right. This is the way people behave, and it's the way I behave and it's perfectly all right.' But in the real world it's not."

Once he had faced that fact, therapists helped him find the root cause by discussing the major traumas of his life. When was the first time he had felt fear? He was five or six year old, the baby of his family, and his brothers objected to him being the pampered kid. "One of my brothers in particular didn't like it. I just remember being threatened with a knife, and being terrified and trying to fight back."

The therapist asked him to stop at that memory, to forgive his brother and forgive his parents for not being there to protect him. The idea of forgiveness was to become central to his recovery – as was the idea that his subconscious was causing his drinking by harbouring traumas. "I don't sit around thinking, 'Oh, I was nearly stabbed to death when I was five,' but it was obviously there." By forgiving everyone in his life who had hurt him – including Paton and the Rollers – he found they no longer had any power over him.

Most of the Rollers were just boys. Paton was more than 20 years older. In our first interview, McKeown had claimed Paton made passes at band members, and admitted that despite his own streetwise quality, his self-confessed problem with anger-management, he was frightened of Paton. In therapy, he finally admitted his fear stemmed partly from a sexual encounter with the manager. When asked if force was used, he acknowledges that it wasn't. "There wasn't force, as such. There were drugs involved, and the next minute it was all going on. I kind of think I was cajoled into it." The drugs were Quaaludes, a form of methaqualone taken recreationally to enhance sexual desire – sometimes indiscriminately. Did he know he was taking them? "I knew I was taking the drugs, but I didn't know what that was going to do."

The whole incident involves a lot of guilt. "I wasn't going to tell anyone in the whole of my f***ing life. I felt guilty about being in that situation, about playing a part in my own seduction. I felt violated, and then guilty for enjoying it. I enjoyed the sexual feelings – and that's what makes me feel ashamed. I still think to myself, 'I did that…' I have to stick with it, the reality. I can't turn back the clock. It's hard to deal with that – or it was. Now I've dealt with it, it's not hard any more. There's a certain freedom in that. I am what I am. Take me or leave me."

He seems to see Paton as some kind of trigger, but was he aware of being attracted to men before that incident? Yes, he acknowledges. And there were more later. He does consider himself bisexual, though sometimes he thinks it's emotional attraction as much as sexual attraction. How does he feel about Paton now? "I kind of feel… Not a lot, really. I did absolutely hate him, and the mere mention of his name would make me think, 'F***ing Tam Paton…' but I suppose he's inconsequential now. I even say daft things to my wife like, 'Maybe I should phone Tam up and go for a meal and talk about things. Maybe I should just see him as a human being who makes mistakes too. Something has obviously happened in his life to make him the way he is.'"

The list of his grievances against Paton was endless. "I said to the psychiatrist, 'Can't I just give him blanket forgiveness?'" To forgive, he had to face up to reality first. Part of that was acknowledging his heavy drinking hadn't started with the loss of his parents, as he'd convinced himself. It had been going on a lot longer. Weeks after we meet, he sends a long e-mail. "I can see that most of my life I have lived in a constant state of extremes, all of the good tragically poisoned by all of the bad," he writes.

Bereavement did, though, cause a breaking point. "I've come to terms with the loss now. I still get a little bit choked up but I can talk about them, whereas before, even the mention of their names had me in bits. It was one of the things I looked at in rehab." He laughs. "I've forgiven them for dying. How f***ing dare they! I know it sounds like a joke but I was angry. Now when I think of my mum and dad, I think of all the good things and think what a lucky boy I was to be brought up by two beautiful people."

PEOPLE WHO HAVE visited Paton's Edinburgh mansion paint a slightly debauched picture of a beautiful place gone to seed, a dovecot in the garden and rottweilers prowling the territory. "The worst bachelor pad imaginable," one tells me. "Filthy towels in the mouldy, smelly Jacuzzi… Clutter… Smell." And always full of troubled, vulnerable young men. Paton usually says he offers lodgings and help with their troubles. When I say I'd like to talk to Paton, McKeown is unperturbed. "You're just doing your job." Paton may have a reputation for being intimidating, but on the phone his voice is light, high and affable, punctuated with giggles. The affability does not extend to McKeown. "Truthfully, the band's problems were created by Les," he says. "I feel quite bitter. I worked hard to build up the Rollers, and he worked hard to destroy them. He wanted to be the centre of attraction. There was horrendous jealousy between him and Eric Faulkner. I think Les has got terrible problems with himself."

Was McKeown insecure? "I don't see why he would be insecure. He came from the most wonderful mother and father. His father was deaf and a lovely man, and his mother, Florence, couldn't have been any nicer. I sent flowers to the ward she was in not long before she died, but he never mentioned that."

There were some good lads in the Rollers. "Woody was a nice guy. The Longmuir brothers were perfect." Hardly. Derek Longmuir, the band's drummer, pled guilty to possessing child pornography in 2000. But McKeown? "He's one of the most bitter, twisted liars I've ever met in my life."

When I tell Paton that McKeown claims they had a sexual encounter, his laughter trills down the line. "I have never had a sexual encounter with Les. I wouldn't take him in a prize draw. I would say that I think Les is confused about his sexuality." They didn't have sex while under the influence of Quaaludes? "Quaaludes," he exclaims. "I think he would need more than Quaaludes." Minutes later he says, "I don't even know what Quaaludes are." Then he says he thinks they're mentioned in a David Bowie song, and Les was a fanatical Bowie fan. So does it bother him to have this accusation made? "Not at all," he says. "As long as you print that I think he's deranged."

Paton says he's going off to Portugal to write his book about the Rollers years. When I say McKeown thinks he could sit down with him these days and talk, he says, "I wouldn't want him anywhere near me." At the end of the call he says suddenly that he's had a very sad day today. His little red Staffie had a brain tumour and had to be put to down. The dog is there with him; he has let it lie for a few hours before burying it. "I'll tell you something," he says. "The more I know about human beings, the more I love my dogs. You get wonderful love from them and never get anything nasty."

McKEOWN COULD DO with a cigarette. He'll get round to giving those up when he's sure he has finished with the drink. We leave the sandwich bar to find another café outside the mall. He returned from rehab in November, but has a respectful wariness of his own sobriety still. It's too fragile to take for granted. My heart sinks when he says he had a tipple at New Year. He didn't get drunk, he insists. How does that work, then? He's the only alcoholic I've ever heard say it's possible to have an occasional drink and stay sober. "I did think, 'This is nice,'" he admits. "'I could do this until I'm really f***ed up, but then I'm going to wake up tomorrow and have a hangover – and I don't want that.'"

His therapists didn't call him an alcoholic. They said he had an addiction problem. Certainly, he told me before that he'd stuck a fortune up his nose in the course of his life, but he finished with drugs some years ago. He thinks if it's somebody's birthday he can maybe have a glass of champagne. "I can't say I'm perfect. I can't say that I won't have a drink again, but I hope… No, not hope… I will only choose to drink in a social situation, and won't drink to get drunk. But I'm not going to make a habit of that."

The temptation to drink comes from stress, the voice in his head that tells him to escape into alcohol. But at least now he also has a different voice giving a contradictory message. It sounds risky. Shouldn't he just stay out of pubs? On the whole he does, but there are a couple of old guys he used to drink with, and he worries about them. He checks on them occasionally. But only for half an hour, and he drinks Pepsi or non-alcoholic beer. One of the guys is drinking too much. McKeown thinks he's having a good influence on him, being off the booze.

The incentive is that he likes the way his life has changed. When I go to get coffees, he ends up on the phone to Jubei. They do things together these days, share a work space in the house. "My son's relationship with me is coming on great. It's not something that gets fixed overnight, but he sends me texts now – 'I believe in you, Dad', 'Don't drink, Dad', 'We love you', stuff like that. It almost brings me to tears when I read it. He has been able to forgive me for the last 20-odd years."

Life could change even more in the future. The Rollers' "missing millions" have been the subject of speculation for many years. The band claim Arista Records failed to pay full royalties on the 100 million-plus records they sold worldwide. The band members should have been set up for life, but McKeown left with only a credit-card debt and several of the others returned to their old day jobs. The animosity between them, the fact that McKeown was an alcoholic, meant years of disunity in the fight for the money. But now they have joined forces to take legal action. Four members of the band are represented by one person, McKeown by another. It was always that way: McKeown against the rest.

But one company represents them all in America. Holland & Knight has 1,100 attorneys and offices all over the US. It is not the kind of company to take a punt because the Rollers are a bunch of nice boys. A return is expected. "This is very serious litigation, involving many tens of millions of dollars, against Arista Records," says a legal representative for McKeown. "The claim is sub judice but we have certainly filed pleadings, and we wouldn't have done that unless we fully believed in our cause."

The wheels of American justice are squeaking just as loudly as British ones under the weight of cases. The end of pleadings in the proceedings against Arista was in June 2007, and given that most cases are heard within two years, a preliminary hearing is finally expected this summer. The judge may find for the Rollers, or for Arista Records (now owned by Sony BMG), with the possibility of appeal on either side. But the case may also be sent for full trial, which would inevitably mean at least another two-year wait. "This may be the first chapter in a lengthy War and Peace-type book, but we hope it's the final chapter in a long story of fighting for justice for the Bay City Rollers," says McKeown's representative.

Paton, who insists he can prove that all he received from the Rollers was £70,000 (his money has come from property deals, he claims), insists there are no missing millions. The Rollers spent it like you wouldn't believe. Hiring David Bowie's studio in Switzerland, buying limousine firms… So Paton's not making a claim, then? Well, he has lawyers in the US too. And if it looks like the Rollers are getting anything, "We are just going to go in and freeze the whole lot."

Arista's defence is based mainly on legal arguments about the time taken to claim the money, rather than moral arguments about whether it's owed. In fact, the Rollers have fought for the money behind the scenes for many years. McKeown believes if there's justice they will get it. But he's not banking on it. His life has to be based on something more stable.

He's still working with his version of life with the Bay City Rollers, and would continue working even if he got rich. Looking back, he seems a bit ashamed of the acrimony in the original band. "It was pretty egotistical, petty stuff. I held on desperately, loyally, to my hatred for years. 'I've got a reason to hate him' – what was it again?"

He wears a wrist band that says, "It's Perfect", to remind him to live now and not in the past. "I've never been happier," he says. There's nothing to be ashamed of in genuine tears, and it's sometimes a sign of an honest interview. But I can't help thinking, as we say our farewells, that it's significant this is the first time I've met McKeown and he hasn't cried.

Rehab is shown on Wednesdays at 9pm on Living TV

I think the director of Passages described Les perfectly :-)

-----------------------------------------------------

Alicia Douvall, Les McKeown and Victoria Sellers were "so courageous" while they were filmed in rehab, their clinic director has said.

They were among seven celebrities to take part in new TV series Rehab, in which they attempt to combat their various addictions at the exclusive Passages clinic in Malibu, California.

Chris Prentiss, director of Passages, said he thought the celebrities signed up to the series because they were "willing to do anything to be able to come here". The centre normally costs clients over £55,000 a month.

Chris said: "Each one of them had a marvellous personality and you could see why they were celebrities, and yet each one had really deep-seated problems that caused them to turn to various forms of addiction."

Glamour model Alicia, for instance, was addicted to cosmetic surgery, having had over 100 operations, while actress Victoria had a drug addiction.

Chris said former Bay City Rollers singer Les, an alcoholic, was "so warm and loving and caring - you know Les was one of my favourites."

They were joined in rehab by glamour model Cassie Sumner, star of US soap The Bold And The Beautiful Sean Kanan, musician Robin Le Mesurier and X Factor favourite Rowetta Satchell.

By The Westmorland Gazette »

A LIFE-long Bay City Rollers fan whose daughter died earlier this year saw her dream come true when Kendal Town Football Club and The Citizen arranged for her to meet her musical hero.

Susan Wright met the lead singer of the ‘70s hitmakers, Les McKeown, at the football club’s Park venue, where she showed him a photograph of her beloved daughter Kelly, who bravely coped with cystic fibrosis for 18 years.

Les was delighted to meet Susan and dedicate the song 'Give A Little Love' to her during the gig.

Susan, whose friend Terri Hughes from the Commodore Hotel in Grange also helped organise the meeting, said: "I have loved him since I was 14 years old.

"Meeting him was amazing. He wanted to know more about Kelly. He’s put a smile on my face again."

Bay City Roller Les McKeown comes to North Shields

Published Date:
27 January 2009
By TEGAN CHAPMAN
Entertainment Editor
DUST off your bell bottoms, as the original frontman of the Bay City Rollers is coming to North Shields next week for a one-off show.
Entertainment editor TEGAN CHAPMAN grabbed a quick word with the star ahead of his whistle-stop visit to the region.

By his own admission, 70s pop star Les McKeown is a bit of a bad boy.

With a string of addictions, a court appearance for drug charges, and headline grabbing tales of money owed but never received, the Bay City Roller has been through a tough time in the last 30 years, but is proud to have come out the other side a better man.

The 53-year-old tartan warrior is refusing to duck out of the limelight, but is swapping the stadium tours for intimate gigs, playing shows where big musicians often fear to tread.

"Everyone goes to the larger cities, but I wanted to go to places where no one plays – like North Shields – we are trying something different," he said.

Playing North Shields may be a far cry from the heyday of Rollermania, when the band sold over 120 million records, but Les, who will bring Les McKeown's Legendary Bay City Rollers to the Percy Park Rugby Club on Friday, February 6, said the smaller gigs are a great chance to get close to his audience.

"The smaller gigs are often sell-outs and are brilliant to play," he said.

"If I had my way we will be in the north east a lot this year."

Having battled with alcohol and drug addictions, Edinburgh-born McKeown is now back on his feet and clean after a life-changing stint in a Malibu rehab centre.

"I had to hit rock bottom before I could come up," he said.

"It was something I sort of knew I had to do.

"I have been a bit of a bad boy with alcohol and things and I had to go to rehab in Malibu to get off that," he said.

Now Les' stint in rehab is being made into a TV show – Rehab – for Living TV which will be aired in February, where he and five other celebrities battle their various addictions.

"It isn't car crash TV, it is more about the process of rehabilitation – all my tears and emotions will be out there for all to see.

"It was very traumatic, but now I feel a big weight has been lifted off me –I am free of all these things, the life I had led has gone.

"I am glad it got so bad because it led me to Malibu, and that has really changed my life.

"Life is too valuable to waste, and my life is now 360 degrees the other way around – I eat healthy foods, I take my supplements, I go to the gym, and I'm finding it quite interesting to walk around and discover places near where I live that I never knew existed."

Despite his new life, there are no plans for a Bay City Rollers tour.

The group, who made an estimated £5billion but claim they never saw it, are in a legal battle about royalties, but are still a long way off being the best of friends.

"We argued over who was better looking," he jokes, "But we never really got past all that."

As for next week's sold-out gig at Percy Park, the fans can expect all the classic songs from Les and his band.

"Of course there will be Shang-A-Lang and Bye Bye Baby.

"Just don't expect pyrotechnics!" he laughs.

"It will be a lively show to take us back to the 1970s, all the songs you would expect, just with a bit of edge to bring then up to date."

A band from Whitley Bay High School, The Plimps, will be supporting Les Mckeown's Legendary Bay City Rollers next week.

For a chance to win a pair of tickets to the sold-out North Shields gig, simply email tegan.chapman@northeast-press.co.uk with your name, address, telephone number and why you think you should win them, by Wednesday, February 4.

Bay City Roller's Les McKeown to join celebrity rehab show
Dec 11 2008 By Rick Fulton
BAY City Roller Les McKeown and busty model Alicia Douvall will face their demons in a new reality TV show.
The pair joined five other fallens tars desperate to take control of their addictions in Rehab.
They got tough with their problems at Passages, a luxury clinic in Malibu, California.
Les,53, fights his alcoholism, as the Record revealed last month.
Glamour model Alicia has body dysmorphia. As a result, she keeps having surgery to change the looks she hates.
Fellow lads' mag favourite Cassie Sumner is treated for bulimia.
Other celebs to take part in the show, which is broadcast on Living TV in February, include Victoria Sellers.
The daughter of Peter Sellers and ex-Bond girl Britt Ekland is a drug addict.
Happy Mondays singer Rowetta Satchell, who was in the first series of the X Factor in 2004, will be seen battling her alcoholism.
So will guitarist Robin Le Mesurier, son of Dad's Army star John.
Sean Kanan, who appeared in US soap The Bold And The Beautiful, faces up to his painkiller addiction.

Just got up from last night concert. It was brilliant, had the best time, the magic was there. It was great to be up front in the first row, could have danced the whole night. Too bad, I had to catch my train back to hamburg, so I could not stay much longer. Beside Les, I also enjoyed the band very (!) much ("Simon")!
