It can't be done. You can have an adventure that uses as little fossil fuel as possible, but you cannot entirely avoid the use of fossil fuels. The manufacturing of your bicycle used fossil fuels. Even if you get on as crew on an engineless sailboat the dacron sails will have been made with fossil fuels. On the other hand, it is still an exciting and worthy adventure to travel any significant distance using a combination of vehicles that do not rely on the combustion engine. Forget the carbon footprint ecological ethics of it! It's just going to be way more of an adventure traveling at the slower pace, and chances are you will have more time to meet interesting people along the way. Jay and Ari are both correct, but the bottom line is flying is boring as hell, and driving nearly as much so. When you get to the East coast you should be able to find folks looking for crew for the Atlantic trip. Good luck in your travels!
