Chip Log. I saw a Walker Log in a consignment store that got me curious, but that has way more moving parts.

Imagine a mini-sea-anchor crossed with a knotted sounding lead and you get the idea.

Apparently the key is to put the knots every 47.3 feet and time how many knots go by in 28 seconds. With practice, folks say you can get pretty accurate. Certainly more accurate than the paddlewheel impeller on my last boat, which was apparently placed in a turbulent flow, yielding readings +/- what the GPS was showing in still water!

I gotta try this...
