Chip logs are a TOTAL pain in the ass. I've used both, and I'd just as soon toss the entire chip log into the drink rather than use one. I've towed a walker log plenty on passages and you loose the spinner every now and then, but the log itself is bullet proof, the chip log is just annoying, and awkward to use, only give you your speed when you get off your butt to toss it in the water. Chip log is cheap though and you can build it out of what ever is around.
